We’re near the end of having a new kitchen fitted and as part of the project some of the old units have been used to create a utility room at the back of the integral garage. It’s a mate of mine who’s done the work (he is a kitchen fitter by trade) and being totally anal he’s done a fantastic job.
However, the front end of the garage has always been my workshop using the cheapest Ikea units known to man. Over the last 10 years it’s grown “organically” (literally in some places) so I had to do something. The first thing is a proper ring main has been installed as part of the utility space so that will be extended to my end. I finally got rid of the daisy chained 4 and 6 gang extension leads and replaced them with a proper server cabinet grade 12 gang PDU. The (now wall mounted) cabinet and desk have their own PDUs.

It’s getting there. I have a twin outlet RJ45 socket to wire up to allow direct connection to the DVR’s PoE ports as the 4 port PoE switch is deliberately part of the LAN. This allows me to test all sorts of configurations. I will probably run a socket in by the laser printer. Might also be useful when the internet connected beer fridge gets invented. There will be some trunking to tidy up the permanent connections and some plastic bins have been ordered to put on the shelf to house all the bits and pieces currently cluttering the place up that still need to be close to hand.
I’m still not sure what to do with the servers, they’ll probably stay as they are. But the WA801ND is currently one end of a wireless bridge spanning the room as the router is wall mounted at the utility end (the BT socket is in the kitchen). When the ring main gets trunked to this end an Ethernet cable or two will go with it (in a separate trunk) and the WAP will go back in the cupboard.
I’m just liberating a Brewdog Punk and going to see what crap is on the telly…
