I have done a refreshed Windows 64bit installation on a HP Stream Notebook.

It has no Windows updates, I have been trying all last night and today and it keeps saying

      Searching For Updates.

In Windows 7 you can get fixes, I can’t seem to find much on it.

I have downloaded and installed Windows Update Standalone Installer and that keeps searching.

              I am a little confused

On the second link all of the updates are just explanations no linkable download.

On the first link I downloaded Windows 8.1 KB2919355 x64, it was 690mb

I clicked on it and it opened standalone installer, searching for updates on this computer.

This happened within seconds, I was expecting for a 690mb file would take 2-3 mins and nothing is installed.

It might take an hour or even more before it has identified all the missing updates, and starts doing the installation.

                      Thanks Boris

As regards key patience, after 4 hours it hadn’t worked. I left it on overnight, still hadn’t worked this morning.

I will try your new links tonight, nice one.

seems to imply that KB 2920355 is crucial ?

                          Boris

                          I am getting know where.

I am taking it back to factory settings and try again, last time I refreshed settings.

Trying to cut corners didn’t work.

Well I never, I now have the above links installed.

They all come with standalone installers, I just realized standalone means (make sure your not connected to the internet.

Disconnecting (offline) installing each one (after reboot) works,

I was trying to install while still connected to the internet.

Maybe change forumite user name to Thickhead?

Not thick John, we’d have all fallen into the same trap.

It makes no sense. I can only assume that MS think if you’re connected it’ll see if there’s another solution available online.

It’s this sort of behaviour that drives me wild.

                                Phew thanks Dave

It got me near wild, but got there in the end.

At the beginning of the object was to save space on C:, I gained 12GB of free space. After a few programs and Windows updates  I am down to 4GB free space and still updating.

I never found out how to delete recovery, just as well as it has been using it.

Myself I would never of purchased such a small HDD computer.

Many of us here got an example of these times win8 tablet machines, mainly out of morbid curiosity than actually wanting to use it, and of course we’re all strange geeks that by to s of crap.

I updating my one the other day and it currently sits at 20gb full 9gb remaining iirc.

Though I lived with win 7 on a 30gb ssd for about 6 years. I did have a 16gb ssd that I booted mint off.

Many moons ago I had a girl friend from that area – not more than a mile or so from where they meet. Brings back happy memories of a very gauche young man.

Duke it’s nice to know I am not on my own
Only 4GB ramaining, give it a few months and it will all be used.
They could have give 50gb to allow for updates.

Boris you’re not to know I don’t know of Windows fascinating characteristic.

I did use a standalone on Windows 7, while connected to the internet and it worked as it should.

To be honest this is the first ever Windows 8.1 I’ve updated from scratch.

Also it was built in 2014/15 so after a factory restore (2014/15) Windows update has left it behind. This being the first attempt to update 3 years on.

Just sign into win8 with a Microsoft email account. Update it to win 10, when 10 us up and running them wipe it and fresh install win 10, it’s what we did here just to see if we could.

Not need to pay for win 10 upgrade it’d still free if you use spell checker, or anything that can even be faintly classed as an aid.   😉

Tbh I think I heard windows even removed the button that asked if you are lying or not. So it’s still free for anyone that knows. Not illegal in any way.
