Another nugget of information.
It appears that WSL2 on Windows 11 DOES have GPU acceleration enabled by default.
I installed the x11 package on Windows 10 but it was unable to open a display device for xcalc, works just fine on Windows 11 though.
February 20, 2022 at 10:22 am #69212@Wheels you are obviously from the ‘Forth’ generation. I could never get my head around RPN and kept slipping back into normal stack-intensive mode. As a result Forth wasn’t for me, and the same probably applies to XCalc!
February 20, 2022 at 11:33 am #69213Yet another nugget of information 😃
Client versios of Windows don’t support nested VM’s, so that means that a VM can’t create another VM.
An upshot of that that surprised me is that a VM can’t run WSL2 either, because it requires creating the WSL2 light weight virtual machine.
If you want to do that kind of thing then you will need a server version of Windows, I suppose Microsoft has to earn mony some how 😁
February 20, 2022 at 12:16 pm #69214Apparently it can be done with VMWare, but it needs Hyper-V and core isolation to be disabled. Not really a solution for Corporate machines however. I wonder what the impact will be on Dockers, I suppose these are OK as M$ used to support them. If not, there will be quite a lot of unhappy Corporate types!
I think all this probably results in Oracle’s VirtualBox being virtually useless for Win11.
February 20, 2022 at 2:19 pm #69215I haven’t played with docker containers on Windows (maybe I will and get back to you 😁) but it looks like the same restrictions would apply.
You can have your Docker container running on the ROOT OS but not on a hosted VM.
Corporate users would have a server version of Windows though, and the restrictions don’t apply there.
February 20, 2022 at 6:31 pm #69216Judging by the complaints on the VMWare forum it would appear that the Windows 11 restrictions apply to VM clients of the server, so while it may well be true that a server host can run vms within a vm, this does not seem to apply to the server’s guests.
I guess if this is a real problem for Corporates then M$ has some work to do. As M$ has a joint development objective with VM that will be where any changes take place.
With respect to running a Docker within a vm guest, it appears that it may well be possible to do this on a Linux guest, but people seem less sure of doing this within a Windows 11 guest.
February 20, 2022 at 7:59 pm #69217Apparently Docker’s TOR excludes running Dockers within a VM!
Personally this seems to be a strange exclusion, in that I cannot see why Docker needs this, other than it may perform very slowly compared with running on a host.
May 11, 2022 at 11:48 am #69522Microsoft are extending the requirement for a Microsoft account (MSA) to Windows Pro users:
“Previously, we shared new requirements for internet and MSA on the Windows 11 Pro edition. Today, Windows Insiders on Windows 11 Pro edition will now require MSA and internet connectivity during the initial device setup (OOBE) only when setting up for personal use. If you choose to setup device for Work or School, there is no change, and it will work the same way as before.”
Imo linking an Admin account to an email address reduces security somewhat. However, I reluctantly set things up with an MSA, install everything, then set up a real Admin account with an non-obvious name, and down-grade the MSA admin account to a mere ‘User’ status.
May 11, 2022 at 1:41 pm #69523Just set it up for Work or School then when it doesn’t find a domain you create a local user. This is exactly what I do with W10 Pro.
June 26, 2022 at 7:13 pm #69647It does look like W11 is getting there. I figure I will make that change sometime in the new year.
Obvs, no reason to switch for maybe up 9/10 months.
June 27, 2022 at 7:01 am #69649I have been running W11 for some time now. However, other than perhaps security I saw no obvious benefits, and quite a few minor irritations due to the different Windows GUI.
June 27, 2022 at 12:36 pm #69651Yep, looks like the switch for me will be on account of a new build and new optimized games for the O/S
June 30, 2022 at 11:46 pm #69666My surface pro 7 updated itself to Windows 11 a few months ago, but my hobby PC still runs Windows 10 with Windows 11 running in a Hyper-V Gen 2 virtual machine.
It’s going to stay like that until Microsoft drops support for Windows 10, at that point a new motherboard bundle is on the cards 😁

Yeah, new build time. I choose my words carefully when dropping a new game build on the misses.
I’m still here, so I must be good at it.
July 1, 2022 at 7:49 pm #69670Start doing some personal AI graphics research – it is amazing what sort of spec machine you can justify!
July 5, 2022 at 1:26 am #69700For those of us running Windows 11 on unsupported hardware
eg – https://forumite.co.uk/forums/topic/windows-11-on-older-hardware/
MS are saying that when support for Windows 10 ends in 2025 all users must log in with an MS account & there will be no further security updates.

July 6, 2022 at 6:37 pm #697043 years to think about it. Business is ignoring 11 and there’s no way they can force that on them. They could say Enterprise version only though, but I fear that ,ay trigger a revolt.
A lot of my small businesses are now in a situation where they could ditch Windows as a lot of line of business software has moved to the cloud. Teams is just over the top now it’s trying to replicate an on premises domain, the skill set to administer it is way above enthusiastic amateur level.
But the two businesses that I have moved to Google Workspace are jogging along very nicely. Both could easily move to a Chrome o/s and not miss a thing.
July 9, 2022 at 10:28 am #69728Hmm, Chrome OS.
So, whats is better, Chrome OS or Mint OS.
July 9, 2022 at 11:40 am #69730Cloud or local?
It depends if you want to put everything into Google’s Cloud then Chrome, if you want to stay local then Mint or any other Linux distro.
July 9, 2022 at 11:56 am #69731@EDP. Uh huh. That is good to know. I dont do cloud.
