I noticed recently that if I set up a computer and sign in with my Microsoft account, the user folder is named tippo instead of tippon. It’s nothing major, but it’s annoying me that I can’t find how to change it. Everything I can find talks about changing it on one computer by editing the registry or creating a new user, but this has to be coming from MS.

Anyone know how to fix it please?

The only way I have found is a Windows 10 re install, Dave (ricedg) once showed me how to turn off  a microsoft account. That won’t fix the user folder name though.

        Cheers

I dislike using a public email name as my Admin account. My first actions are to set up an Admin Account with some obscure name and only use that for Admin purposes. I then set up a daily user with user only access and degrade the M$ account to very restricted user status. I use it once in a blue moon on the VERY rare occasions I want to install a M$ app.

M$ normally complains whenever there is a major update but I do not care!

The above link may help. Not sure what you mean by user folder though ?

Graham I don’t think it will change the folder name (user) only the sign in, unless Tippon is on about some other folder.

Thanks Wheels for the tip. However I’ll stick to degrading the M$ account as it is too nosey!

Btw This link addresses various ways of meeting Tippon’s requirement, the suggested method of using a *symlink is probably the cleanest, and safest.

                *actually a directory junction.

                C:
                CD\Users
                MKLINK /J  Tippon tippo

My link is also a bit out of date it seems as MS has moved things around (as is their want) but the general idea is the same.

Directory junctions are mostly kept around for compatability reasons. Since symbolic (soft) links were introduced in windows Vista they can do what a junction did and more with the /d switch, including linking to a remote directory on an SMB server.

I have never used my Microsoft Account to log in when installing but have always used the link which is something like Use Local Account which is at the bottom of the log-in page. This avoids the problems described and I have never found any difficulty logging into Microsoft apps after the install,

Thanks for the replies guys 🙂

I’ve been doing some more digging today, and it appears that Windows 10 truncates the username if you sign in during setup, and cuts it down to five letters. The only way to avoid it is to follow Jukebox’s steps and sign in after the computer is set up.

In most cases it’s not a problem, but if you occasionally use the command line, or have existing programs that you copy to a new build, it’s a pain in the backside.
