I’ve been getting notifications for the last few weeks saying that Windows can’t install an update, and it keeps retrying at least once a day. As far as I can tell, it’s the feature update to Windows 10, Version 1803 that’s sticking, but it’s also currently trying to install 2018-06 Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64 based systems (KB4023057).
Whichever one of the two that’s not working is telling me that Windows 10 couldn’t be installed. Windows can’t be installed because this PC has an unsupported disk layout for UEFI firmware.
I had a problem a little while back where a Windows update killed the startup sequence, so I had to use EasyBCD to rebuild it, so I’m pretty sure that this is where I’ve gone wrong.
Can someone tell me where to start to sort this out please? Windows is booting properly now, but obviously not in the way that Windows wants >.<
July 10, 2018 at 6:44 am #22939I’d start with Microsoft’s troubleshooter. link
I’d also shutdown then reboot but log in to an Admin Account before manually starting the above and an update. It is sometimes a driver that is causing the problem especially graphics drivers so do the yellow exclamation routine. (I’d also remove any attached usb kit before starting the update as their drivers also cause issues – do the hidden devices thing and clean out that driver pool)
edit – hands-off while updating may also help.
July 10, 2018 at 8:21 am #22943I’ve had similar problems with the initial Anniversary Edition Update ( 1706?) and then the Fall Creators Update ( 1803 ). 1706 eventually installed ( somehow ?) but luckily I’m on an unlimited BB as it kept downloading, trying to install ( and failed ) but kept trying to download each time. I tried DL’ing the iso to do it manually but it still failed. Then one night it just went through?.
With 1803 it started to go through the same routine, but I got fed up with it and installed the iso to an SSD and then re-installed all my programmes. It’s currently sitting there on the SSD and ticking over nicely so far:).?
I copied all my documents to a spare 1TB drive and I’m in the process of tidying that all up so it should seem transparent to the OS. The previous set up is still on the original 1TB drive. JIC!!
July 10, 2018 at 11:47 am #22946I forgot – one which had me tearing my hair was an ASUS Bios updating program. I think anything that fiddles around with the UEFI is probably going to need to be removed and reinstalled later.
