It appears that from the middle of May you have been unable to use a Win 7/8.1 key to activate Win 10 ?

      See https://www.techradar.com/news/windows-10-free-upgrade-is-still-alive-and-kicking-in-2018

      “Alternative route
Unfortunately it seems the other method of upgrading to Windows 10 – using an existing Windows 7/8.1 product key to activate the installation of the new OS – has also been deactivated at the time of this writing.”

On installing Windows 10 I am sure it asks if you want to upgrade this PC? (not sure if the offer works on 7-8.1)

If so then buying a licence off ebay is as good as free (or don’t they no longer sell on ebay)

In that, the free upgrade is still available.

Never used the upgrade option on install, the logic seems possible?

Edit: Maybe I am wrong as an upgrade from 7 carries the 7 licence key.

        Cheers
        John

My recent post ‘Pardon my ignorance’ make me now wonder if my free upgrade which was unwittingly accepted many many months ago, has now cost me the ability to use the original W7 disk which W10 upgraded? !!

That said, personally I detest W10 possibly from lack of experience with the OS.

On the subject of activating Windows 10, I had a strange one today – a 3 year old ASUSPRO PU551LA lappy (i5-4200u + 8 GB DDR3) which was originally downgraded from new from Win 8 to Win 7 Pro.

It wouldn’t boot – the original 500GB spinner seemed deceased.

It had been used 6 days a week for 10 hours a day, but had definitely never been upgraded to Win 10 according to the owner.

So, I fitted a Sandisk 240 SSD and installed Windows 10 on it using the April 1803 ISO – just to see what (if anything) else on it might not work.

Couldn’t believe it when after going online to get the latest Win 10 updates, it activated itself  as Win 10 Pro !

I’d been expecting to have to buy a cheap Ebay key for it as my stock of Win 7 keys were supposedly going to be of no use according to my original Tech Radar post !

Presumably it got the activation via the BIOS ????

I can’t think of any other way.

Did you look to see if your W10 licence is linked to a Microsoft account ?

Have a look at this link https://www.windowscentral.com/how-re-activate-windows-10-after-hardware-change

                He doesn’t have a Microsoft account !

There was no problem in re-activating – it has never had Win 10 on it to date.

Just phoned him and he confirms that it has been purely Win 7 from new – he had no interest in upgrading it to Win 10 for free as he prefers to use Win 7 which he is familiar with.

Well its a funny thing then that the first thing he says in his excuse my igorance post is that he accepted Microsofts offer of W10 offer and installed it ?

That post is about dwynnehugh’s experience – I am talking about a completely different user/machine.
