My Asus p5G41T-MLX is running Windows 7 and Windows 10 on separate Sata HDDs Press F8 to boot, no probs.

I now have my Sisters (sadly passed away) Lenovo E50-00 Desktop. It’s running Windows 7 Pro 64bit.

I wasn’t going to bother with Windows 10 however I purchased a (cheap) W10 License off Amazon.

With past experience on the Lenovo you can’t add another HDD, (as it only has 1 Sata plug and 1 power plug) one for 7 and one for 10.

It has a 500gb HDD so plenty of space to partition, I am not sure if the F8 boot option works the same for partitions as it does for separate HDDs if C: was 7 and D: was 10 on the same physical HDD.

        Don’t do it.

Why do you want to keep running 7 any way?

          Maybe not then Dave

Some thing don’t do it for me on 10 like 7 against XP I can’t keep paying for software.

It’s like my old Winzip 8.0 I purchased another for 10 but that seems to have lost the password protection facility. So I purchased another (by Ashampoo) couldn’t get on with the interface, so back to Winzip 8 on Windows 7 and so on.

          Edit:

          Then there was Nero 7 don’t work on 7 or 10 I can’t afford Nero 10 +

There are free equivalents of all those tools. No need to pay a penny to anyone. Besides, Windows 10 has full .zip support already built in.

As dave said don’t do it.

But to answer your question if you DID do it and get it working (big if) you would not have to press an F key. At start up Windows boot manager would give you a list of installed OS’s to choose from.

There ARE situations where Win7 is MUCH better than Win10. I use Windows 7 as a management interface to my security cameras. Windows 10 will NEVER be installed until I am allowed to switch off automatic updates. Windows 7 is just set up to tell me of updates and I then select a convenient time to set aside to bring down the Home Security system.

If M$ do not come up with a viable alternative updating system I will junk M$ and move the system to Linux. (not something I really want to do).

Thanks Jason I will have to try out some equivalents. I have noticed W10 open zips not found password protect on zip creation, I need to look further.

Thanks Graham I am swayed not to see if I could get it working.

Thanks Ed I too don’t really want to ditch 7 for it’s few uses (not in 10)

At times the bullet has to be bitten.

If you really did want to give it a go then the theory is quite simple but I would not try it on a live system.

First you would install your older OS. As you already have W7 installed next I would check the partitioning to see if you have a system reserved  partition. If you don’t I would give up but if you do then next you need to shrink the Windows partition to make FREE space for W10.

Start the W10 installation and when it asks choose install into free space. The W10 installer should take it from there and set up a multi boot system.

Thats it all done all woking fine ( Good luck  )

I think with 8+ duel booting of a partitioned drive is just asking for trouble, even if it works toady, tomorrows win update could bork it up.

If I was to dual boot I’d do it off two seperate drives.

You Amy be able to fit a second hdd into the laptop if you remove the dvd drive. That’s if it had one, they are mainly redundant today. I’ve not had a laptop with a Dvd drive since 2007 the Dell xps1330, since then no optical drives present. My pc’s don’t have dvd drives in either.

If, and a big if, I heed one, I have a Samsung USB dvd drive that cost me a tenner ten years ago, in my service kit, that I use. It’s been over a year since I last used it, may be two.

It’s not a laptop, it’s a Lenovo desktop. However it’s the quad J1900 so only has 2 SATA ports and nowhere to mount an extra HDD in the case any way.

It’s no so much about getting it working, Graham has outlined that, it’s what it does afterwards.

Since 8, Windows really thinks it’s in control of everything and has been known to start “fixing” things on the 7 partition.

Dual booting is now a yesterday thing. If you want to run multiple o/ses on 1 box you use a VM.

Thanks Graham I will  look into it.

                          Thanks Duke

The Lenovo (Desktop as Dave says) seems to have a mind of it’s own.

I went to upgrade 7, installing nicely then it stopped and couldn’t find ??. It reverted back to 7.

So for now I thought use another drive and disconnect the original (7) drive, maybe later nick the Sata / power plug from the DVD and use a USB DVD. Then I can use the 2 Sata plugs for the new drive (10) and the old drive (7).

So off I go and 10 starts installing nicely, the rig re started (as it does after the 1st install part) continuing the Win 10 picture came up and then on to the next part, the screen went black and goes no further.

                          Investigations under way.
