      I always believed you shouldn’t ever defrag an SSD – this appears to say differently ?

        A post referencing an article by a company that specialises in defragging trying to sell defragging software for SSDs because the spinner market is shrinking, and making out that it will make a difference (think about it, no seek time on an SSD, so, ermm, yeah).

        Go figure.

        Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Nice CoolerMaster case, 2 x NV GTX 1070 8GB, and a whopping 32" AOC 1440P monitor.

              An ssd does ‘garbage’ collection so doesn’t need it. Also given an ssd is solid state it doesn’t really matter where the data fragments are on it, as there is no waiting around for the disk head to find said data.

              I’ll pass on defragging an ssd. Though I doubt it would do any harm if one did defrag one, just don’t think it wousl do any good either.

                I just slipped a new PSU and Slim top fan into my son’s desktop. The PSU he had was supplied by his lad, I said when I took it from 7 to 10 that he should have a new PSU, but no. Then he gets an intermittent fault, I test the (generic) PSU and find the 12v CPU rail is bugga’d. Got him a Corsair CX 550, but noticed that the top fan was touching the memory and the 12v rail: my bad. Bought a slim 120mm top fan, he picked it up today after work. I would like him to have an SSD, but he has a brand new 1TB spinner and is not fussed about speed. I will get him one soon. I showed him the bootup on mine, with the 480GB Sandisk: BAM!

                Still not impressed. Oh well.
