Not the fastest connection but it’s working!
And I’ve put in to change to Plusnet – half the price of what we’re paying for TalkTalk in a deal. Makes sense. Might be a better router than the crap Technicolour one we’ve got here currently! The Wifi can’t make it to the other end of the building – I’ve had to add in an extender.

July 30, 2017 at 2:55 pm #10662Lol Chris, you have to the love the “slower than 90% of the uk” reference.
Tbh 1.4meg is unacceptable on today’s rich websites.
There are many providers now that will give you basic Internet for free (excluding line rental) . Sadly that won’t be avalible for business use.

I’d bought this one a while ago to test the line with (it was under £20 at the time). But it refuses to connect even with the correct username and password. Not sure if I’m missing a setting somewhere.
Has to be better than this one we got with the broadband.
Tried using my old powerline networking plugs today there as well – speeds were worse than the wifi using Speedtest! And I just noticed there’s a cable that goes to the rear of the hut so at least where we’re looking at getting the flight sim, we should have wired internet.
@Duke – yeah it’s dog slow, but all we need it for is to get on to our management system and sharepoint. It’s not ideal but it’s to pricey to get fibre just for six hours use a week!

July 30, 2017 at 8:48 pm #10673I remember that awful Technicolor router from when I first had ADSL Plusnet. When they fibred-up the village (FTTC) I was given a BT modem to go with it. I did not think that an increase from 1.5Mbps Down, to 2.5M, was right. Bought a TP-Link VDSL router and got 6.5M. With Sky I get 10.75-ish.
And they can’t even spell “Technicolour” correctly either!

I'm out.July 31, 2017 at 10:57 am #10678I’d never heard of Technicolour Routers before so though you was having a joke regarding it’s age.
July 31, 2017 at 12:23 pm #10679I have an unused router as supplied by TalkTalk, a Huawei HG 533.
Yours if you want it. I’ll even stump up for the postage as it’s for a good cause.
Either PM me your address or email me at hotmail dot com (preferred).
Over the years I have tried a number of different routers including BT Home Hubs & none have failed to connect to TalkTalk. It was only the very first connection that required any user input, all others connected automatically. HTH.

July 31, 2017 at 5:39 pm #10688We’ve a fairly laid back evening tonight (bull night – so the cadets should be getting the uniform ready for my inspection on Thursday!) so that’ll give me some time to have another look. Now it’s working, I’ll try the newer router and see how that fairs. If that works, then I’ll think we’ll be Ok thanks. If not, I’ll wait and see what the Plusnet router is like (we’ll be switching anyhow – the Plusnet package is half the price of what we’re paying for a year so it makes sense to switch).

July 31, 2017 at 6:17 pm #10691So cadets turn up for bull night/inspections. I was paid and use to look for places and reasons to hide.
In reality I sucked at actually boot shinning, I’d iron an oppos uniform and let them do my drill doors. It bored the life off me, just like drill.
In regards to inspections, the RM are laid back compared to other regiments. Once you got the first half if training out the way that is.
Do you make the cadets do quick changes, getting all kit and uniforms dirty?
My BiL is now a Sgt instructor in the raf, (on his way out) , and he is now one of “them” that he whinged about a short 12 years ago.
July 31, 2017 at 7:09 pm #10694Steve these are ‘AIR’ cadets – dirt and Brylcreem never mixed in the old days!
July 31, 2017 at 8:47 pm #10696The majority of Raf today arnt the brylcreem type.
I think the whole UK as a whole only have 8 aircraft, the raf probably 30%

And the Army Air Corps have most of the Rotary Winged Aircraft (Helicopters to you).

I'm out.August 1, 2017 at 1:30 am #10702Helos to me bob. It still bugs my BiL who has worked on rotary winged aircraft, (different from fixed wing, (a plane to me))
But he still calls his weapon a gun, which is a sidearm, and the ammo bullets! And you you lot called the gpmg a gimpy, which was a hugh no no for us. Even though much quicker to say.
You can call a side arm a gun, that’s fine, or you can call a rifle or a gun a weapon, but a rifle is no gun. It’s a weapon. And you have rounds not bullets. Round go in, and bullets come out one end and brass out the other. If your lucky the hot brass goes in your oppos open jacket.
Anyone that will know, when your underfire you will have your jacket open, and that is where your spent mags go. And the guy to your lefts spent brass!
I suppose in your day bob it ejected from the top? Mag underneath? With out some Google foo (too late) I don’t actually know /remember. I shot a lot of old stuff, but only really remember the sa80, lsw(long sa80), gpmg (back breaker and motor magnet), law 94, which was mostly pointless and heavy, And of course the staple 81 mortar which to was also back breaker, and made you a heavy weapons magnet.
Always better to just have the SA80, it brought less attention on you in the field.
August 1, 2017 at 8:51 am #10706I suppose in your day they also didn’t have Darth Vader helmets… link.
We got to play with some “toys” of the RAF Regiment last year on camp.

August 1, 2017 at 12:34 pm #10710In the AAC they were all Aircraft, differentiated as Rotary or Fixed wing. We called a gpmg a gimpy, yes, but all weapons were Personal Weapons, whether pistols (then a 9mm Browning) or the old SLR, or in my case, an L42A1, the rebarrelled old .303 Lee Enfield. I loved that weapon, it was such a stable firing platform. I would have enjoyed a shoot with one of those .50 calibre Barretts that SF’s use now.
Agree, Steve: bullets and guns do not exist. It’s bulleted rounds and weapons.
The SLR, before I changed to the L42, ejected across to the right and up. As a LH shot, that made things dangerous for my eyes, so I had to turn up the gas regulator. Which meant more cleaning for me, as the barrel soon carboned-up. As daft as the Army is, I always had to have an SLR in the Armoury, even after I had the L42, which I had to Qualify on 4 times a year. So I had 2 personal Weapons, later 3 as they had all sniper-qualified personnel take a 9mm Browning. I got good with that too, after a great instructor showed me how to tuck it into the web of thumb and index finger, forcing it down onto my thigh. That makes the grip rock-steady. Never had to use it in anger though, which for a sniper is good news. If you have to use one in action, the opposition are too close and you are probably well-frigged if they are in numbers.
I could run and zig-zag pretty quickly then, as well! I think the AAC in my day had to have some all-purpose people like me, as the Regiment was still small then. Only pilots wore the AAC badge at first, the rest of us were still REME.

I'm out.August 1, 2017 at 12:42 pm #10711What the hell is that for Chris? I hated wearing a helmet full stop, they would often be taken off, as they just get in your way. Most thought they offered a higher percentage of getting injured that not wearing it. Never mind the fact they seem to almost aways cover your eyes on fire manovers.
Not to mention they are too hot, I bet they would steam up like a respirator when your on the move. At first glance I thought it was some kind of respirator.
Or it it simply a posh mod cycle helmet.
August 1, 2017 at 2:49 pm #10713I honestly can’t remember! I believe it attaches to the standard issue helmet.

August 1, 2017 at 3:23 pm #10714Would be good for paint ball ?
August 1, 2017 at 10:01 pm #10721Chris that looks like some kind of Flight Helmet, maybe the love child of an Apache Pilot’s helmet and a respirator from an NBC suit. ? I have never seen anything like that. I also hated helmets, as a matter of fact I liked the old RM woolly hat, was it a helmet liner Steve? Comfortable, nice for sticking bits of camo in the weave, and the right colour. A big Welsh REME mate who had served on attachment with Booties gave me one, he had several in his locker, never asked where from. I have a pic wearing it somewhere with the lads, me looking all desperately warry.
I still have my old Jungly hat from the Borneo job, well most of it. I had 3 altogether, because all sorts of crap dropped onto them, they rotted. Always turned it inside out before wearing, all kinds of crawlies fell out. We used to bring Geckos back to the block in them, stick them on the walls to catch and eat bugs. Geckos happy, we were happy!

I'm out.August 1, 2017 at 10:24 pm #10723Was definitely for the guys on the ground. Weighs a fricking ton.
We also got to play with one of these. Would have liked to have a go, but they don’t let cadets fire them off funnily enough! Cock up of the camp probably goes to the female cadet who asked if she could “w**k the grenade launcher”. It was pointed out that she meant “rack” the grenade launcher… amused staff trying very hard not to collapse laughing!!
