Fair point, but maybe Ryzen does warrant a thread on its own. We tended to throw the kitchen sink into the ‘Does anybody still Build?’ topic. For what it is worth my take based on all the various reviews is that Ryzen is NOT a killer games machine. It is merely OK and will help keep Intel’s prices ‘honest’. The (future) server version of Ryzen may be far more interesting to those who need a new server.

From my personal perspective, although I can write multi-threaded applications I tend not to do so, because few normal applications really need to be multi-threaded and they also tend to be a ‘b’ to debug. The only exception to that is graphics work where running a thread for each scan-line usually makes sense. The gains however are not staggering as the GPU can often be used instead. From a purely personal standpoint I’ll stick with CPU grunt/power consumption as the drivers of any choices I make.

I use VMs a lot, but these run on their own cpu/core so again it comes down to grunt. If Ryzen somehow optimised I/O or I/O band=width usage it would however be a winner for me, but so far that does not appear to be the case.

I do however look forward to real-life user experience with great interest, so please keep this thread open!

It wasn’t a critique as such, the poster had literally only just joined this forum, so wouldn’t necessarily have seen the discussions already undergone on Ryzen. I was just pointing him there.?

Theres some niggles on the net, like: missing performance due to Ryzen being dual channel with some latency problems.

Game wise I see the problem being down to the AI software of how the chip is utilized. We may even see in the near future game profiles being written for best performance, like the support in the GPU drivers.

I am surprised with Ryzenz 4.2 GHZ overclock ceiling Obviously down to blah blah blah but did imagine 4,5.

I figure the 6 core 12 thread to be the Gamers CPU of choice for system building as and when it comes out.

All being well to be well optimized as AMD figures its way around some of the current bugs. :good:

They’d only just have started out on the journey to the course, and would have ended up somewhere else!!  :scratch:

We’re into the if’s again, it could be a killer chip if this or if that.

Ed, “server” is such a generic term. The Synology’s I buy use ARM processors. My own x86 server is a lowly AMD dual core aimed at the mobile market. All do their job admirably for SOHO or SMB general workloads.

I guess you may be talking “big iron” type servers for specialist workloads or multiple VMs in which case things like the I/O you mentioned can become just as important as number of cores etc.

As far as multi-threading games go the developers will code to their user base so it’s the old chicken and the egg. There are still plenty of (big name) games where single thread grunt is the key and Intel still rule that roost. Why would you hit sales by making the required significantly hardware higher than your market owns?

My take on it is AMD are at least back in the game but still 3 goals down. The team isn’t bad in parts (good penalty taker) but needs to get the cheque book out so next years team can be a winner. But as Jason mentions we need to reserve our final opinions until the lower down range is out. Who knows? There may be a killer chip waiting there, but I have my doubts and think if there was we’d know about it by now. Why would you keep it a secret?

With all the efforts put in by the GPU makers and M$ an awful lot of the threading now takes place on either the gpu ‘engine’ or its associated Physics engine. About the only big sensibly threaded task for the cpu is AI for each actor (really no reason why there should not also be an AI/pathfinding engine on the GPU too). I hate to say it, but I think Intel called the long term play much better than AMD. I guess we will just have to see if AMD can optimise and get the cpu clockspeed up a notch or three.

As AMD make pretty good GPUs that steal some of Intel’s cpu bread in the process why would they spend too much time on raw cpu clockspeed when they can probably get a much bigger bang for their buck from the portable  and gpu markets? Pride and a ‘don’t put all your eggs in one basket’ philosophy is about the only drivers I can see.

I suspect the 4+4 design isn’t finalised yet or isn’t in the production chain. AMD could have sent a cobbled 8+8 design out to reviewers, but that would have been no use if retail units weren’t available to buy at launch. I think it’s a case that AMD were anxious to get something on the shelves and not so much that if there was a killer 4+4 chip we’d have seen it by now.

I still reckon a 4+ GHz 4+4 chip, especially at around £200, will give a serious headache to Intel.

There’s an interesting article on Ars Technica that explains why AMD got it wrong with Bulldozer in the first place. They made a bet that software would start to favour the GPU for Floating point operations, so that’s why they cut the number of available FPUs on the bulldozer design.

Zen goes someway of reversing that decision, but not completely. Which way you go between Intel and AMD will depend on the workloads you want to go with. The AMD can process more operations simultaneously, but the restricted memory bandwidth that dual-channel provides may mean that Intel is better. So it’s not a clear-cut either way like it used to be.

Plus, if it wasn’t for tangents and personal touches,  tales and experiences, this forum would of died when MM did,as no one would of got to know each h other and give a shit. It would just be another, sterile tech forum.

There is a place for that style of forum, but the forum itself (as in the site)  needs to have a dedicated focus, MM and now this doesn’t, it’s a general tech meet up area, like a geeky pub, that tech is main general topic on stead of football and ladies.

Back on topic – Risen doesn’t look interesting at all.  more of the same from AMD. That’s about as much forum space it needs at this point.

If your open to suggestions Lee, is there a search  bar, wile I was away I wanted to update the thread on Westworld, and I couldn’t find a search bar to look for it, and couldn’t be bothered picking through the forums, as I had no idea what forum it popped up in.

I do tag my threads, but last week was the first time I wanted to look for one, and found o couldn’t. Or at least could search out a search bar.

@sgb101 – It’s there Steve – recently improved by Lee – it’s a blue bar just above the icons for “Who’s online”, below the topics on a mobile, and above the same icons to the top right of the screen on a desktop.  :good:

@admin – maybe a different colour to differentiate it from the other blue bars/tabs??
