Of all the things, I’ve been listening to Alexander Armstrong’s long player (on the Echo Dot). The man has a fine voice, there’s no doubt of that.
April 5, 2017 at 7:49 pm #5872I tend to have little time to listen to music and lack any inclination to seek it out. When music is presented to me and I have time to listen I prefer ‘non recent’ productions of anything that jells with my mood at that (rare) time. My Hi Fi has probably not been switched on in 25 years and that was probably when it was re-setup and tested after a move. One of the then young children had very sensitive hearing so the rooms with a ‘musical capability’ tended not to be used.

April 5, 2017 at 8:01 pm #5876Beastie Boys, Licence to Ill and Paul’s Boutique. Back to my youth.
Also Hawkwind, Credence Clearwater Revival and Nina Simone.
April 5, 2017 at 8:04 pm #5877CCR did some top tunes. BOC, too — more than you might think. I’ve never really got Hawkwind. Almost everything I’ve heard is very sloppy.
April 5, 2017 at 8:12 pm #5878Currently this video on Youtube as I study for OASC next month
Though the rest of the day it has been the latest Public Service Broadcasting song as they prepare to release the new album that focuses on coal mining and Wales.

The world is my oyster ha ha ha ha
April 5, 2017 at 9:32 pm #5884Loads of Hawkwind, Ozric Tentacles, Kraftwerk and Iggy Pop.
There isn’t really anything such thing as “Hawkwind” their sound has changed greatly over the years. Most people still think of the early 70’s Silver Machine in the “Doremi” days. Just lately they’ve been revisiting some of the early stuff. You still get the full stage show too.

And I got to see Arthur Brown doing Fire as support in 2012 (?).
April 5, 2017 at 10:32 pm #5886I think Brock’s the only original member, isn’t he?
They were on at the Ramblin’ Man Festival last year, and I fancied having a listen, but sadly they clashed with Airbourne and Thunder and I missed them.
All I hear on Planet Rock are the same few “classics”, so I confess I’ve no idea about the band’s newer stuff. I’ll have a look on Spotify.
April 5, 2017 at 11:12 pm #5887@ Jason. Yes Dave Brock has been there from the start. It’s a long and sorry tale at times of falling outs, but it has always been a band that people drifted in and out of. I have tracks with Lene Lovich doing the guest vocals, and it worked! (Angela Android being one).
Rather than the new stuff I’d point you towards the “Bob Calvert” era as I’m sure you’ll appreciate his semantics and Brock was at the top of his game. All the albums at that time were on Charisma. Reefer Madness, Steppenwolf, Spirit of the Age, Uncle Sams on Mars, Robot, Hassan I Sahba, Death Trap, Quark Strangness & Charm, and Flying Doctor are stand out tracks still performed today. At the time they had a stage set called Atomhenge. Later in the set the gaps between the pillars were drawn up to reveal massive spinning mirror shards on which spots were aimed. I’ve seen Calvert in full Biggles meets Lawrence of Arabia gear throwing arabian scimtars into the stage during Hassan I Sahba. There were rarely dancers then, they didn’t need them with Calvert fronting. At that time they had a brief stint as the Hawklords when Brock was trying a Jefferson Aeroplane / Starship type change. There is a band of ex Hawkwind members called Hawklords actively recording and gigging now that are well worth seeking out, but only Harvey Bainbridge is in common with the line up then and that was only at the very end. But they didn’t choose the name Hawklords to be associated with that era. They are more late 90’s Hawkwind in style and do it very well. Well they would, they were there at the time!
A lot of Hawkwind is free with Amazon Prime including the 1976 -1984 anthology called Spirit of the Age which includes the Charisma days.
April 6, 2017 at 1:42 am #5889Just finished SAS rouge heros by Ben Macintyer this morning and then smashed D-day through a Germans eyes by Holger Eckhertz, while at the football tonight, and travelling.
Both books a fantastic. The second one much shorter At around 5h, but a great book from eyes of the losers. Not usually a point of view you get to hear, given its always the victory that get to curate history.
April 6, 2017 at 9:55 am #5893It probably will not surprise you to know that NONE of the above means a single thing to me, except for the thread title.
The simple reply from me is the Beethoven on R3 right now, with a full variety of mostly pleasant stuff for the rest of the day.

April 6, 2017 at 10:14 am #5894I’ll bet you had problems finding that on a 60’s/70’s jukebox!! Except for the “Roll Over…” version:)

Yes, a good choice though even they do go all weird from time to time.
April 6, 2017 at 10:38 am #5896I’m more of a Swingles Keyboard classics or Electronica type of person, but Music is like Brexit – most people have their own firmly held views.
Music takes many forms and can even provide a suitable accompaniment for political events!

If we’re comparing music to brexit, then I’m on the out side. I just have no time for music of any description. I find it a waste of time. Rather have a book playing in the background, or a podcast of some description.

Thanks for that. I’ve just bought the Spirit of the Age collection (’76-’84). 🙂
April 6, 2017 at 2:30 pm #5901Yes, whilst much of R3 is easy to listen to and enjoy, some is very difficult. That has me moving to R4 and listening to mostly speech. Back when I had my head stuck inside some difficult electronic diagnosis, only R3 on radio. If I changed to R4, I could not stay focussed on the problem. If I am just “doing something”, then R4 is not a block, so I actually listen to it more now than previously, but always start the day with R3 over breakfast. During the week, I wake up to Manx radio, my only brush with the local news.
Les.
