Look’s like it going to be the best one so far “Cough, This Year” well past 6 month’s. I love bad weather personally, I find it very relaxing as it kind of introduces an atmosphere with the sound and all, and as I am resuming proper work tomorrow it will help me back in.
Brace your self!

January 2, 2018 at 12:50 pm #15134I can’t see any mention of eleanor! round here. other than the low will be 5 during this blustery night.
Cheers
JohnJanuary 2, 2018 at 1:53 pm #15137Yellow warning of wind here from 18:00 for 24 hours.
Winds expected in the mid 50s mph overnight and we’re inland.
January 2, 2018 at 2:09 pm #15138I’m about a mile from the sea as the crow flies, getting very windy already.
If it’s windy here it’ll be twice as bad on the coast. Might have to take a drive.
January 2, 2018 at 2:12 pm #15139Predicted gusts of 60’s here but where I live the streets and house funnel the wind so it don’t half kick up.

January 2, 2018 at 2:47 pm #15140Ah, wind funnels. There was a power station, (in Yorkshire) I believe that was close to several hills and sat in a valley. One day a strong wind blew, strong but well below the design limits for the cooling towers. Suddenly the towers blew away and everyone was shocked.
The hills and valley walls had formed a lovely venturi. The wind did not blow the towers down, but the wind assisted by the shape of the landscape produced a vacuum just like that in a carburettor, Rather than suck up petrol like in an engine as it rushed over the top of the towers it sucked them apart.
Hills and tall buildings can dangerously interact with winds, take care. The combination near cliffs and sea can and does kill.
January 2, 2018 at 2:48 pm #15141Im a bit worried and it was blowing a gale last night, so not looking forward to tonight.
My gable-end faces the sea, looking northwards so we get the lot, it makes the roof tiles hum when the wind really picks up, and scares the crap out of my dogs. And my wallet ?
January 2, 2018 at 2:51 pm #15142@richard i remember seeing soothing about a new town building, in the UK, last year that was doing this, the council or the owners of the building had to put up street tunnels around the building as it was literally blowing people, especially the old, off their feet.
I can’t recall where it was.
Update, it is in lees neck of the woods. Bridgewater place. See video below
January 2, 2018 at 6:33 pm #15153It’s rotten here now, chucking it down and the wind is picking up again. Went down to Barry Island earlier and the wind was immense, low tide and I could see the waves in the distance, 6ft odd easy.
January 2, 2018 at 8:30 pm #15159Tornado alley seems to pattern along the Motorways with the eastern end of the M4 having more of them. link
Scary things, I’ve only ever seen one once from a mile or so away, near New Plymouth NZ and that was enough to last me!
January 2, 2018 at 8:46 pm #15163Just got back from CT scan, quiet in Grimsby until I set off down the A16, then felt the Tucson drifting a bit. Was worried until I saw that trucks and smaller cars were wandering about all over the place. It’s settled down now, quiet here, a few miles from the East Coast as the seagull flies sideways.
Richard I think that wind funnel is somewhere near Brighouse, on the M62. I was driving that road about 1974, when a hell of a blast took the Avenger I was driving, across all 3 lanes. Fortunately it was 3 am and there were not the Midnight Truckers we get nowadays, so I had the M62 almost to myself, (and a young lady from Huyton, Liverpool, a whole other story)
True story: when I was a workshop foreman, I drove one of the first Sierras, company car of a local SUDG windows & doors sales pillock person who worked all week and came home weekends. He brought it to me to check out why it wandered all over the road, one Saturday morning. I spent hours looking for steering & suspension faults, found nothing, had a brainwave based upon my Air Tech experience. Got my mate to drive it and stuck lots of woolen tassels on the rear panels, either side of the rear pillars. I watched these tassels and noticed that there were vortices spinning them round, instead of streaming straight out behind.
Came back and sent a message to Ford via a mate at the local dealership. He got an award from Ford for “noticing” this, gave me £50. Look at the first pic: rear quarter light (small window) – no strakes. Second pic – small plastic strakes fitted at the rear of the glass under the seals, to break up the vortices of air. Now, was the Ford design engineer asleep during wind Tunnel testing?

It stopped Sierras wandering across the road. Bob Williams, shouldabinadeziner. I thankyou!
When the Thought Police arrive at your door, think -
I'm out.January 2, 2018 at 10:16 pm #15165Just been watching the latest Wheeler Dealer with Mike B and Ant Anstead. Their first project was an ’95 Escort RS Cosworth.
The car was originally designed by Frank Stephenson. He designed in an extra wing in between the boot-lid spoiler and the whale tail.
That was canned by the Ford bean counters to keep costs down. So you got this:-
Ant got him to draw his original idea down and made one up for the WD Cossy, and he fabricated one giving them a 30% boost in downward pressure for the rear end @ 100mph – from 69 to 94 iirc..
This is what their version looks like:-

So it just goes to show costs were more important to them than the design ethic. I can understand that with the family Sierra, but not with the Rally Spec RS Cossy.
Edited to re-include first picture.

January 3, 2018 at 4:23 am #15170Combination of aching knees – did a bit too much in the garden today – and noise from the wind howling/gusting – I can’t sleep.
Not as strong as back in ’87 but noisy none the less.
January 3, 2018 at 4:25 am #15171I got a couple of hours in before it really picked up. They give this all day so should be fun.

January 3, 2018 at 4:39 am #15172Comparing forecasts, the wind here is a couple of mph down from yours, but yours is showing continual light/heavy rain showers – we’ve not got that atm and it’s showing sunny intervals for tomorrow.
I got about 12 hours last night, so I’m not feeling too bad – just a bit dozy!!
January 3, 2018 at 4:46 am #15173Yes plenty of rain here. 12 hours sleep ? How do you do that, I would love to be able to sleep more than five hours ?

January 3, 2018 at 4:51 am #15174I was feeling rough about 7.30 pm so I went to bed, woke up about 10.30 for a pee, went back to bed and the next thing I heard was the first alarm @ 6.55am. It doesn’t happen often.
January 3, 2018 at 4:53 am #151756.55 am , it’s only 4.55
