Plugged my phone into the car this morning, waited for it give me the Android Auto option and tapped it, then selected maps as usual. Waze started and off I went. When I’d cleared the traffic I noticed that Waze still thought I was at home so switched to Google maps, that worked as normal.
When I got to the supermarket I deleted the Waze cache, the phone cache and removed Waze. Re-booted the phone and re-installed Waze. It worked for a bit but then went nuts, just jumping all over the place. Again Google maps was fine.
I’ve just deleted all the caches again (and Android Auto one) and removed waze, rebooted phone and reinstalled Waze. It still won’t work properly.
Any ideas folks? Hopefully it’s just a glitch but I can’t find anything the same online, similar on certain phones but not my OnePlus 5T.
August 21, 2018 at 6:16 pm #24982I wonder if it may have auto-updated and the new version is either flawed or doesn’t like your phone? If so a roll back (rather than uninstall) or sideload an older version apk (auto-updates disabled for a while either way) might confirm if it is related to a particular version. Otherwise you’ve already done everything I can think of!
August 21, 2018 at 6:28 pm #24984Thanks BL, just checked and no update since yesterday when it was working fine. ?
Annoying but not the end of the world. I miss the traffic/roadworks/ police warnings more than anything else.
August 21, 2018 at 6:53 pm #24985Ah thats a shame mate. For the speed cameras if not already using try TomTom Speed Cameras – free and can be used as a stand-alone app or in Overlay mode with Google Maps or any app – hovers a speedometer anywhere you like on the map – and warns you about fixed and average speed cameras. Been using it a few years with Google and works very well. I agree Waze is very fully featured – I found the UI annoying but it is very popular and I believe owned by Google.
August 21, 2018 at 7:01 pm #24988I would use TomTom overlay but it won’t work with Android Auto, google owned apps only at the moment. Which is a pain.
August 21, 2018 at 7:03 pm #24989I am liking Android Auto Nolan, which you spoke about on here some time ago. Navigation works well and easy to turn off if I don’t need it.

August 28, 2018 at 4:13 pm #25276Out of the blue Waze started working again today. No recent updates or anything. ?
Very odd, just glad to have it back again!

August 28, 2018 at 6:54 pm #25278I think the amount of Hawkwind I’ve been listening to coaxed it back to life. ?

Fell off twice Nolan, then found that there was something lightly smeared on the window glass. Cleaned the car including windows yesterday, used “Astonish” on the windows and was rightly astonished: it worked! It’s holding up for now, but it fell off while the hot weather was with us (got up to 31ºC here). When the heat comes back as they reckon it will, I will check it out. My car parking space faces South all day and I have a sunscreen, windows open a bit, inside of car is till a bake oven when it’s even mildly warm. It’s been a great summer here, spent a lot of time on local beaches away from the Grockles.

Sure that’s not the case – unless it doesn’t apply to Music programs? Because I’ve had Doubletwist and DS Audio working through it I’m sure. I’ll have to check again.

That makes more sense. I’d only used Google Maps so that explains why I didn’t come across the issue. Not quite a draconian as Apple CarPlay then which only apps Apple approve (though I hear this may well be relaxed slightly in iOS 12, allowing the use of Google Maps, not Apple Maps).

August 30, 2018 at 11:15 am #25341Not used Apple car play, but did once use apple maps of my sons phone. It done the trick but I didn’t like the way it seems to have more writing to follow, than the arrows that Google maps does.
Hard to explain, but I find Google maps is the best for getting alot of info across at a glance.
I use to use waze alot, for trh community aspect, but if I’m gong on a motoway trip I’m unsure off I’ll alway use g maps as that’s (for me) is by far the best at telling you what lane to be in when coming off motoway. The junctions that may have 3 lanes and the road spits ect.. I find Google is always the best.
Though in France it was a little wonky at times, but I think half of that was down to my brain having to also calculate for the oppersite side of the road.
Over all I’ve found apple maps to be my least favourite out of the big map names. That’s not my apple bias either. All I want from a mapping app is fast info at a glance. For me atm Google is top of that list.
My new car will have auto and Apple CP so I’ll be able to join the party. I don’t like or see the point of auto on the phone. Used it a few times. But it’s never stuck with me. Probably cos I set up my book of pod cast before I set off, and if I need a sat nav, I just say “ok goo… Navate to etc. Works every time.
August 30, 2018 at 10:19 pm #25368I’m currently wondering if I can use my 8″ Lenovo tablet as a Satnav, with Google and Android Auto. Tablet has a slot for a SIM, but only to receive messages, not send. Would I need that? Don’t need Speech as I just follow the maps, but it would be useful. It has a good camera too.
That would make one heck of a Satnav and even I could see all the info. Got me thinking now..

I'm out.September 2, 2018 at 1:54 am #25478I used my Hudl 2 tablet as a stat nav a couple of years back traveling across Europe, before data was cheap.
So to save on the cost of a sim and data, just download ‘Here maps’, it is excellent, and doesn’t need data, you can dl the maps you need all free. Was Nokia here maps. Not sure who owns them now, but it’s a great product.
The 8” tablet made an excellent satnav.
I have here maps on my all my phones and use it as a fall back for two occasions 1.if I’m in a data black spot and have got lost and 2. Leaving sporting events or theme parks.
Ive noticed all googlevmap and Tom Tom users drive the same way, so that’s 95% of today’s moterists, I found out that Here maps offers different routse to the rest, so when you know 10k other cars will be going my way, I find Here maps routing come in very handy.
Though if you use Google or tom Tom, a good tip is to drive against your directions (and the conjestion) for long enough untill it stops telling you to turn around, and you’ll dypass the traffic. Never head towards to closes motorway junction, as everyone else’s Sat nav is also going that way. Alway quicker to head towards the next town even if it mean going away form home, and through a town.
I just hate sitting still, I’d rather spend the time in motion.
