If possible roll back the last update, and do it again. This is the sort of situation where I find System Restore invaluable but it is not a default setting in Win10.
April 10, 2017 at 12:16 pm #6056Thanks guys 🙂
I’ve used a restore point now and got back to a working system, but I was trying not to as the restore point was almost a fortnight old. I’ve just checked SrtTrail.txt and it’s telling me that the system booted successfully, even though while I was trying to fix it it would hang on the spinning circle under the Windows logo. On the few occasions that it got past that, I was getting a blank screen and nothing on the computer would respond over the network, like network shares or VNC. Just double checking the file creation date, it’s telling me that it was created at 8:11 this morning, while I was in bed and the system was running. My programs are still open from last night, so it hasn’t rebooted either.
I had this problem with my father’s computer a few weeks back, and because System Restore wasn’t switched on, I ended up putting a new hard drive in and putting a fresh copy of Windows on. I’m getting more and more underwhelmed with Windows 10 by the day :negative:
April 10, 2017 at 1:07 pm #6058As EdP says – remember to check and switch System Restore back on (if necessary) after Win 10 has done any updates !

Good point. Thanks for the reminder 🙂
April 10, 2017 at 6:52 pm #6065I swapped the hard drives over in two Win10 machines. They both complained that they were unlicenced but that the systems did have valid keys logged with MS. The one with a licenced copy of Pro started downloading to update but the one with Home on couldn’t downgrade and wanted re-installing.
All together I’d give MS 9.5/10 for that.i7 4790s / 8GB / 480GB SSD / GTX 980 / 34" UltraWide : i3 4170 / 8GB / 480GB SSD / GTX 770 / 24" Samsung : i3 4130 / 8GB / 500GB Spinner / GTX 1050 / 23" Acer : Q9550 / 8GB / 1TB Spinner / GTX 580 / 22" Acer : i7 720QM / 8GB / 1TB+2TB+500GB Spinners (server) : i5 4570 / 8GB / 60GB SSD / 1TB / GeForce 210 / 22" Dell It's getting warm in here!
