August 27, 2019 at 7:48 pm #36010Edinburgh Castle is good if you like your history. I don’t know what the tours are like though, as I was lucky enough to go with a friend who’s a history buff and gave us his own tour. Lots of good places to eat and drink in the city too 🙂
August 27, 2019 at 7:49 pm #36011Good time to go, with luck you may even catch one of their two days of summer!
It depends what you like, Scotland has everything from the cultural heights of Glasgow and Edinburgh to deep fried Mars Bars. The Malt Whisky centres in the Highlands are pretty good too. It is also very scenic, especially the west coast – Skye is well worth a visit but you really do not have the time.
(Every time I visited Aberdeen I froze my butt – even in June!)
August 27, 2019 at 9:15 pm #36014If you want to see the Western Isles, Oban is a good base. https://tinyurl.com/yynfqmug
Lots to do, lots to see and some of the most wonderful scenery in the world. My brother (17 years my senior, RIP Big Bro) and his son my eldest nephew (only 5 years my junior, RIP family comedian) used to tour the Isles every year. Distilleries were very involved, my nephew knew the area as he lived and worked there from age 18 to 51, was married to the (then) Oban Postmaster’s daughter. Briefly. The people are very hospitable and their spoken English is very good, as they speak slowly. Many are Gaelic speaking.
Spoken by my Big Bro, endorsed by his son : “If you can’t see the mountains on the next island, it’s raining. If you can see the mountains on the next island, it’s going to rain.”

I'm out.August 27, 2019 at 10:15 pm #36031I can agree with Ed, Aberdeen is always cold and wet. Lived there, just south, for a couple of years, as a young man. The weather sucked all the time.
Scotland is beautiful, but the weather is harsh.
September 9, 2019 at 3:58 pm #36546Well I climbed up The Ben or Ben Nevis. I was the only bloke on the moutain in Loakes levis and a sweater and wooly hat.
Thicko old man C. Any way, took me 7 hours up and down and I had a lie down close to the summit to catch my breath. 10% less oxygeh up there. The upper 3rd of the moutian was covered in cloud. Temps dropped big. At the top my thumbs and face was anaesthetized from the cold and I was aware that my core temp was struggeling. Needless to say after a couple of photos I was on my way down. When I got off the moutain I had a bit of a laughing fit. Glad that was over. The very next day it was the Ben run. yes 250 runners up to the top and down in 2 ish hours. Which makes my saga above hard to beleive. But yeah some folk are fit and young.
September 9, 2019 at 4:43 pm #36548My 40+ great nephew was born just north of Aberdeen and now lives even further north, with his son and daughter (yes I have GT x2 nephers! Makes me feel even older!) He has climbed all the Munro’s 3 times and regularly MTB’s up and down any particular mountain that takes his fancy, MTB on his back for the difficult bits. His work is in the Oil Industry supply business and he really loves his country, which probably explains why he detests Sturgeon and the SNP. Probably the fittest person in our Williams branch, at least since I had to give up running 40 years ago.😊
His FB page usually features a selfie view from the summit of a height. There he lies, head on his MTB saddle, in T-shirt and jeans. If it’s winter he might wear a thick sweater and woolly hat. His eldest son now goes with him at times. He is 12.
