I am very different on clocks and almost a total slut over car washing and for that matter the tyres. I usually have at least matching tyres on the same axel, but front to back it is often a different story. On the old car, the fronts do about 30,000 miles, but the rears went on for closer to 75,000. As marketing moves affect the issue over time, I can easily end up the a miss match front to rear. I did vacuum the front out a couple of days ago and, yes today I was really pleased with the result. However, the dust on the outside would drive many nuts. I do want to see out, but I don’t go much further.
Most rooms have at least one clock and I almost always wear a watch – it is now well over 40 years old and getting the right battery is a real pain. I know the mobile ha a clock, but it is usually burred in an inside pocket and can take what feels like another century to dig it out. A flick of the wrist and I can check the time
I guess it is horses for courses.
March 28, 2019 at 7:53 pm #32190I also hate analogue clocks, the ticking drives me mental, and the fact that it takes me maybe 5 minutes to tell the time if it’s not one of the obvious ones like 1/2 past, 1/4 to.
Last watch that I wore through choice was a Casio Space Invaders one, can’t find it anywhere right now.
March 28, 2019 at 8:41 pm #32192I guess I possibly came from a rather different time. After 70 plus years, I have no problem with a proper ticking clock, though I hate the faux tick of some badly done modern electronic ones. Over the last 40 plus years I have become quite used to switching between digital and analogue, though I find analogue faster to read for most purposes. One glimpse catches the image, which I can analyse as required, the digital has to be read digit by digit with the inevitable was that a three or an eight with a shadow or an oddly formed 5, but the time difference is really only usually micro seconds. Most times the alleged accuracy of one over the other is not important, the nearest minute is more than close enough.
I rarely listen to music, anywhere and the car or home are no different. I only want to hear what I like, which is probably not what anyone else wants, so its either some sort of talk show – NOT ‘SPORT’ or nothing. Creating a play list for the car is certainly NOT for me.
March 29, 2019 at 6:44 am #32208I should not have started on this thread. The kitchen has at least 4 digital clocks, three of which are more or less synchronised, however the central heating is a bugger to adjust and it disagrees with the other three by five minutes. It has been like that for several years but has been ignored, but now it annoys me!

…..and most of them will need changing this weekend along with all the rest in your house!!
Don’t forget folks or you’ll be doing yourself out of an hours’ sleep – unless you’re like me where your body gets into the habit of waking up at a specific time and even when you re-programme the alarms you still wake up at the usual time and you can’t, or it’s not worth trying to, get back to sleep!!!
March 29, 2019 at 1:28 pm #32220The waking up bit is not really an issue for me. I wake at 00:30, 2:30 often 03:30 probably 04:30 and give up about 05:30, though I might lie on a bit. Stupidly the time set wrongly central heating timer is like the PCs and resets to a new (wrong) time automatically for BST. I am going into battle with the thing shortly.
March 29, 2019 at 6:45 pm #32228Well the heating clock is now right and we got to the allergy clinic on time this afternoon. I even achieved the connect car bit, though the country roads were clear of traffic so nothing much gained really.
March 29, 2019 at 8:09 pm #32230I guess everyone has read about the ‘keyless’ car theft problem. (Normally a two person theft, first one stands by the car with a keyless clone fob and second by the house amplifying any lock opening signals from the house.). My only reason for raising it is that my son’s FIL got done today. Car was parked on the drive, thief opened the car and stole everything of any value from the car. He couldn’t take the car as the gate for car was locked shut, they could however just walk in and out through a side gate.
Moral of story is to either park your car in the garage or buy an RFID wallet for the car fob.
March 29, 2019 at 8:38 pm #32232It’s so easy to amplify the signal. Cost next to nothing to get the kit of alibaba.
March 29, 2019 at 9:05 pm #32235The manufacturers are looking to make this more difficult from now on.
Info from Which? article :-
What car manufacturers told us
We contacted every manufacturer mentioned to ask what they’re doing to protect new and existing keyless cars from theft.
Honda declined to comment.
Every other manufacturer, including Ford, Group PSA (which includes Citroën, Peugeot and Vauxhall), Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, Volvo and Volkswagen Group (which owns the Audi, Skoda and VW brands), told us that it takes car theft seriously and that it is constantly looking for ways to make its cars more secure.
Several pointed out that the risk of theft remains low, while Ford also advised its customers to keep their key fob in a metal case to help reduce the risk of theft.
Other manufacturers have introduced measures to protect their vehicles against the relay attack.
Older Mercedes cars – the keyless signal can be switched off by double-clicking the lock button on your key
Mazda owners – contact customer services to get the keyless function deactivated for free
New Peugeot 508 owners – contact your local dealer to get the keyless function deactivated for free.
BMW and Mercedes have gone one step further with their latest models by adding motion sensors into their key fobs. These keys won’t produce any signals when the key isn’t moving, so thieves shouldn’t be able to hack the signal when the key is safely stored at home. All good news, but Ed’s idea of the RFID Pouch is a good one.
March 29, 2019 at 9:17 pm #32236I just delined mine. Luckily because I ordered an 18 model, but they could only supply a 19 model, I could refuse the fancy led dial display (I don’t like yet, it doesn’t go dim enough for night driving) and I declined the keyless go. But future buyers of my model have to accept both.
So I got the more powerful and “efficant” engine, but got to dismiss the bit I dodint want. Now if I was buying I’d of took the posher display as that will command a higher price come sale. But as I’m leasing I just wanted what I wanted.
Keyless go doesn’t float my boat, so I declined it. Even though it was free. Now if I ordered 2 months later I’d of had to accept it, as it’s standers. As is the ‘posh’ display.
It looks amazing, but Ive drove a few at night, and it tires your eyes quickly. Not Something I want given I drive around Europe each summer. 4.5k round trips.
March 29, 2019 at 10:19 pm #32238I’ll check it out, and if it’s useful, it’ll stay. It’s an easy yes/no choice as it’s a Start/Stop button ( think old style Jags ) that plugs into the ignition socket.
Which car did you go for this time??
March 30, 2019 at 8:44 am #32246Me? If so, the Seat Leon ST FR 190 7DSG with the drivers pack. In Bohemian Purple
or in normal speak Seat Leon Estate automatic. Car names are a bit of a mouthful these days.March 30, 2019 at 10:17 am #32248That’s a little bit different to the 2-door coupe you had before!! Still a bit nippy for those country lanes you like, though.
That’s a nice colour. Mountain Grey Metallic was my second choice, I fancied one in Cavansite Blue Metallic, a rich deep blue, but they didn’t have the spec I wanted.
What influenced the size upgrade – the missus, holiday needs or beer barrel transportation??
March 30, 2019 at 11:06 am #32249I always had estates in the past. The coupe was the outlier. As fun as the old one was, I knew as I was ordering it I’d miss the space.
The new car is actually quicker than the old one, but doesn’t handle as well, it won’t carry the speeds ariudm the corners as well.
However it’s a good blend of practical and not dull. Though it likes to drink! And the fuel tank is small at 45 litres. I do miss the 75l tank of my old laguna, plus the 55mpg that averaged every month. Now I struggle to hit 30mpg and have a small tank. Filling it up twice a week!
It will eek out 50mpg on the motorway if I stick to 70. And if I blast down the lanes I can hit low single figures lol.
Basically it’s a poor man’s audi RS6, which I’d love, but don’t have 70k to drop on a car. And don’t think I would even if I did. Also being a high end german, it would end up being closer to 100k by the time I optioned it out, just to have a similar set of toys to the 27k Leon. The car world makes no sense.
The colour is very nice, though I wowed after my last car to not get a dark matalic car again. last one was emerold green, black come green, lots of matalic flake, that changed given the light. Beautiful, but terrible to keep clean.
So I ordered the Leon in Red. About 3 weeks later I seen my spec car in the bohemian purple, as you can see, it’s black come purple, loads of matalic flake, and changes colour depending on the light. I called them and had it changed.
It suffered the exact same dirt issue the old car did. Looks stunning for 48h after a wash then looks awful.
The pick above was just after a clean and polish. About 3 weeks ago. As the pub has eaten all my spare time it’s not been cleaned since, and oh boy does it show dirt. It’s mingling at the moment.
My old laguna was a burgsndy matalic colour. I had that 7 years mudt of washed it 3 times. It just didnt show dirt, same with my blue rover before it, and my white car before that. The rest was business rentals so never bothered with them.
I should of gone with the red or even gray. I was going to get the Octavia Vrs estste (same car as the leon RF) in matt grey, but skoda ruined the front with their face lift last year. I hear they are changing it again this year, as no one likes it, and it’s sales have suffered massively. I want a matt grey one with the black alloys.
Maybe nextime round if they fix the mess they made of the front lights. The spit the headlights in the same way merc did with the e class (iirc) in the mid 2000s. That was a flop too, which was rectified in about 2 years.
Though I’m glade I went with the Leon as imo it has the best front and rear led light design on the market atm. The entry level lean doesn’t, but anything above that they are very nice and aggressive.
March 30, 2019 at 12:08 pm #32252You’ll be able to claim for business miles so that will ease the fuel cost/consumption pain somewhat.
I decided to forego getting a new car because I like speccing things up – leasing made no sense for the same reason, plus not having a relevant business to claim it against. A new B Class fully specced comes in at 32k, mine ( when it comes ) at 2 1/2 years old and 15k on the clock is just over half that. Plus road tax at £20 a year!! What’s not to like.?
Those headlights with the daytime running light on must look like a wickedly grinning cat!!
March 30, 2019 at 12:45 pm #32254Clocks: I love, house is full of them, including genuine Schwarzwald cuckoo clock which ticks like an unexploded bomb.* All are within 3 minutes of each other. Watches: I cannot wear a Quartz watch, they stop within days on my wrist. Not a one-off – I have had 4 over the years from cheap to expensive and it always happens. 2 will never go again, doesn’t matter who wears them, t’others I sold. The best watch I ever had was an Omega Seamaster, an automatic: closest I can find to it is this below and the price now blew my mind! (£5,500.) I paid £1,500 in 1968 after a great Poker win. That fell out of a 3rd floor barracks window in Germany, hit a bedford RL cab, then the tarmac. Beyond repair, all 3 internal cases split. I got a bit back for it in parts from a dealer.
Broke my heart to lose this:

*It keeps better time than our 3 Quartz wall clocks. I recently found (after many years, lol!) that I could turn up the ‘tick tock’ and am currently driving SWMBO crazy with it. “That clock is too loud, what have you done to it?!” I told her that her hearing aids are rubbish, as I have a fancy new pair. I am not looking forward to confessing the real reason…. but the cuckoo is now doing my head in, neighbours can hear it!
