USB Hard Drive Enclosure Price

I was looking to order this from amazon as it’s the cheapest I could find. But, is just me or is that not a bit pricey for what is not much more than a box?

There are some electronics in there as well as some cable and for 3.5″ it needs a PSU, plus shipping from somewhere in China. Also it supports both drive sizes and needs to cool a 3.5″. This usually means using metal rather than the plastic you get in 2.5″ caddies and some means of stopping it rattling around.

The last 3.5″ only caddy I bought is this £20 Wavylink so the extra £2 seems worth it.

Just looked it up and I bought it in July 2019. It’s got an old Seagate 500GB in it and is attached to the Synology NAS for ad-hoc backups, so barring the odd power cut it’s been on 24 x 7 for 18 months.

It was about £2 cheaper then and I use it as a NAS, it works well and takes all my backups with a Seagate 2 TB installed.

That was cheaper as an Eaxer, but I can’t find it on Amazon, probably taken over by another company.

Cheers @bullstuff2 . I had a catnap with the cats after my last post. Anyhow, after coming around and a cup of Yorkshire Tea I started to think about just putting my media on USB’s. Although I have not checked out the full calculations I am sure USB rather than an HDD spinning up save that little bit more energy. I have a good 12 port USB “Powered Hub” Currently I have around 1TB of files I want to save, generally recorded TV. I may just get additional thumb drives as and when needed.

I bought THIS last May for when I was doing a lot of laptop work swapping spinners for SSD’s. It’s been brilliant with a slide top opening and easy swap overs. For 2.5’s and no power supply. Last time I bought a 3.5″ enclosure was a good few years ago, about £20 from PC World. They’re sitting there with a few images and folders on them. All OK last time I checked.

256GB thumdrives at MyMemory are fairly cheap – about £20 when I checked recently. I’ve got one at the minute as a cold store backup that when I plug it in, the drive gets mounted, copied to and then dismounted.

Last 3.5″ enclosure I bought was on the pricey side in comparison to the others above… Qnap TR-002. Currently running two 3TB drives in RAID 0 and holds my game collection.

USB’s just aren’t reliable enough for live data, but for “I don’t care if it’s gone” type files why not? I’m not sure if the electricity savings would amount to anything worth measuring though.

What about a portable SSD? Capacity, power saving plus speed and reliability. The price vs a decent USB stick isn’t that much more Amazon and less than if one of the USB’s goes tits up.
