Hope this is a good place for tech issues.

The USB port on my TV allows me to put my USB Drive in, with photos on.

Do TV USB ports supply power needed for USB powered harware.

ie: I need to convert digital sound to analogue, the adapter uses USB power.

John, It depends on the version of the USB port.

You need to find that out from the manual.

          Thanks Doc

          No longer got a manual

Tesco Technika LCD 32″ TV (can’t see the Model Number)

A search brings up Technika-Lcd32-209v manual

I can’t find anything (page 1-30) about USB (type)

Yes, it will supply power. Though only 500mA at a maximum (and they may have cut corners for price). But it is obviously powering your usb drive, so I wouldn’t see any issue. I use the USB port on my TV to power my chromecast.

The USB socket on a TV is sometimes controlled by software, not always in a sensible way. My current main TV allows me to plug the Ras Pi in for power, with the HDMI output sending pictures and sound to the TV.

The bedroom TV has HDMI, but no USB, so no power available.

Another little TV (21″?), Matsui I think, has both USB and HDMI, so I planned to put a spare Ras Pi on that for occasional kitchen use. However, when set for HDMI source, the USB socket has no power. It is present in normal DTV mode. Unfortunately, we lent this to Tamara’s GD, and when she returned it, the remote had gone walkabout, so IF it is accessible via Menu, I can’t get there.

                Les.

My telly has a 1.0A USB port as well as a 500mA port- so they can go higher. The 1.0A powers a portable 2.5″ USB HDD no problem.

I feel confident it won’t be a waste to purchase USB powered kit.

A quick way to see if you have a decent amount  of power may be to plug your phone in and see how it charges.

From the TV? If so you need to be sure that you can route the TV digital sound output to the USB port, typically these are only set-up to take media IN. If your researches draw a blank then if your TV has an RCA-out port you may get good enough audio using the red and black/white connections (you will need an amplifier I think)

[edit] I looks as though the TV does have an RCA connector, and also has a earphone socket that could feed an amp.(the latter is not normally a good route to go down, but may be possible if all else fails). Audio is not my bag – pity Slippy or Bruce are not on the forum they could deal with these areas much better than me.

I think John just wants to use the TV USB port for power Ed – not sound. Maybe to power something like an optical-phono or HDMI-phono converter. Most of those little gadgets run off 5V dc so can be powered from a suitable USB port.

Just checking – the purpose of his inquiry wasn”t clear to me as a phone charger would do to power up most usb2 devices.

                                  Thanks blacklion n Ed

TV USB port is for power blacklion, to power as Ed says a  converter from optical to phono to my old analogue HiFi (amplifier), so I can listen to the TV through my headphones, I have bad earing.

The TV does have a headphone socket, I use when on my own. When someone else is with me they can’t here the (while I have headphones in) TV so I need to  separate via HiFi I can then hear and sound still comes out the TV speaker.

In my first post I said ie rather than for this purpose (sos)

                                  Edit:

The converter link (to ebay) above, on the link it talks about TV for USB power, so I assume it will work. I created this thread before looking on ebay, I only found this item today.

Try plugging into the RCA. One of these RCA adapters should do the trick, no need for extra electronics.

I’m 95% certain this will work unless for some obscure reason the rca signal is switched off when the hdmi out is being used.

Strange Ed I never noticed RCA sockets on the TV, there is.

I think I have (some where) one of those I will have a look and try it.

If anyone has any comments on using the RCA for phono please chip in – I don’t see why it will not work but I’d hate to send John down the wrong track.

The RCA (phono) connectors that are red / white / yellow will probably be inputs to the TV. I use them to connect up my old Sega Megadrive. If there are red / green / blue RCA connectors, they will also be (probably) inputs.

John, you need to list all the ports on your TV so we can help you out.

Have a look in the TVs menu at sound options. I have seen separate volume options for the 3.5 audio output as well as the built in speakers. This is rare though.

Edit: If you do (unlikely) have RCA audio output, try this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RCA-Stereo-Audio-Splitter-Cable-Lead-3-5mm-Jack-Female-Socket-to-2-x-Male-Phono-/271176572471?hash=item3f23621e37:g:UEQAAMXQWzNSnSQn
