Yes, atm it’s running with just front L centre and R and sounds more than good enough.

However, I want the sub for when i play call of duty ww2. I want to feel the shells dropping in my chest cavity lol.

On the whole, i agree with you about subs, even when turned right down, id still be able to hear/feel it from my bedroom in the small hours

However we don’t have the neighbour issue, we live in a semi and both houses have the hallways in the centre, which makes for a great sound isolator. Luckily for them.

Oh yeah – never considered games as it aint my bag. My advice would be patient on ebay and you’ll get a good deal on an active sub. I can imagine on a game like that the sub would come in to its own. I remember watching “Downfall” before I got shut of mine and it was like being in the bunker with Adolf!

Cheers, I’ll be patient, as I’m not that bothered about great sound. I’ve we shill had box TVs, i wouldn’t probably even of got ss. the main reason is the poor quality of sound from almost all flat tvs.

Sound level of flat tvs arw fine, its the nature of the sound i have, i can only discribe it  as flat and muddy, on all flat tvs I’ve heard.

I should have just got a £50  sound bar with sub. However there is no fun in that. And the Onkyo amp looks cook next to the ps4 and amazon box. It looks for of retro cool. And to most people (inc me) looks expensive and geeky.

Looking it up it was never expensive, but way more than do of spent on one. At £40 and 40 mins drive, its probably a decent deal , but new it was around £300 . i couldn’t justify that. I have to many other expensive ways of burning cash, im not taking up audio too.

One question, is a powered sub and an active sub the same thing ?

First time I heard surround sound in a house was when I was living and working in Cardiff. I shared a house with the DJ and some other staff from the nightclub we worked in. The DJ set up his surround sound in the living room as a treat for us after a particularly busy week, and I walked in half way through one of the Fast and Furious films, still half asleep. I heard a car come speeding up behind me and jumped out of the way – in the middle of the living room ??

My first time was Braveheart, an arrow came flying past my head.

Yep same thing – and the fact that it is powered means it is using leccy all the time it is on – and it won’t switch off with the amp (as its on its own power supply).

You can get subs which sleep until there is any sound to output (sort of super-standby) which means you can just leave them turned on (normally deaerer though). Also subs with their own remote so at least you can turn them on/off without getting up!

Bit of a retropost, but I thought that maybe someone would find it useful to get a <£20 solution to the OP’s original problem.

I recently swapped my PC but due to PCIe changes I could not scavenge the old 7.1 soundblaster card and the on-board sound of the new PC is two speaker only. I hunted around for a 7.1 usb sound card and came up with a CSL – USB 7.1 external sound card. It is brilliant for the money – great sound and mostly compatible with my 15 years old Creative 7.1 speaker set up. (It does not split  the four side speakers out from the Creative wire loom, but quite happily allowed direct speaker connections for these, so back to full 7.1 sound for the small add-on cost of a single mono pair->stereo adapter and a mix & match speaker system.)

Well worth the money if you have similar problems and suffer from short arms/deep pockets!
