My father’s computer is suddenly having major trouble playing videos, including videos that it’s played with no problems in the past. It’s an Athlon X2 4400 and 2GB, so not exactly cutting edge, but it’s the same chip that was running my media centre until recently.

Any video played now takes the CPU to around 100% and the machine can’t cope. I’ve updated the codecs with the K-Lite Codec Pack that I use on all my machines, but that didn’t make a difference. Nothing else is running, and it’s whichever video player that’s in use that takes the CPU usage up, so it’s not one program. He hasn’t got internet access, but I’ve updated his AV and scanned with no nasties. I’ve also copied new videos from my phone to rule out corrupted files, but videos from my phone and his are the same.

      Any ideas?

I’d try the old trick of booting up with linux on a flash drive or live CD to rule out hardware problem before you go spending ages on looking at software.

Is the fan working on the gpu?

Try installing vlc and use that for one play. If it plays without issues then the software has become borked.

Thanks Phitore, I hadn’t thought to try a live disc. I’ll give it a go next time I’m there. P.S. Welcome to Forumite ?

Thanks Ed, I’ll try VLC. I always forget that it’s got its own codecs.

Cheers Tippers. Nice to see a lot of the old crowd still about.

Yeah, we’re still here, just bugging Lee now instead of the MM staff ?
