So my media center PC is getting on a bit. MB KA790GX  phenon2.

My sound card is the powercolor devil HDX pci-e. Now this card receives its power via plug in, like a GFX card but 3 volts.. Its does not get power through the PCI-E lane?

So the card has an electronic switch for on and off, which is clearly audible when the system is booted and shut down.

The switching on of the card became intermittent and then yesterday it would not switch on. I was going to rma it. When I thought put it in another PC and on 3rd reboot it activated as normal and in now operating optimally.

I tested my psu on the media center and all green? I have put another pci-e sound card in which draws its power from the pci-e lane and is working optimally.

      wtf.

Could it be the powerdevil is timing out on such an old system?

      What say you.

That switching sounds like the output protection relay that most HiFi amps have these days. If the sound card has a decent amount of power output ( could that be why it needs a PCIe power connector ?) that would make sense. I can’t see that any sort of time out would be involved.

W.O.F, its a standard 4 pin molex. 3 volts. like for the fans. Hmm, food for thought. I will tray a different PSU. 🙂

I would check the speakers as if it is protection relay not clicking in then they are a likely cause. Course now you are going to tell me that you only have a digital output connected ?

I heard the other day this week ms rolled out an update that was screwing with sound.  they swiftly put a stop to the patch.

Could it be that or is that just a coincidence?

coinincidence. Figure I may put a new build together for the HDX card. I’m liking the Atholn 200GE. I could put a new media player together for less than £??? 🙂
