YEah back on topic – youtube-dl is a good alternative, very powerful but also incredibly simple with nothing to install for basic use.

      1. download the Windows executable here
      2. Save it in a folder of your choosing e.g. “C:\VIDEO” or whatever
      3. Find the url of the iplayer show you want to download
      4. shift-rightclick in the folder where you put the executable and then “open command window” or “open powershell window here”
      5. For command window type: youtube-dl.exe “http://address-of-the-iplayer program”
      6. For powershell type: .\youtube-dl.exe “http://address-of-the-iplayer program”
      7. you need the quotation marks for both of the above
      8. program will be downloaded in the same folder as the .exe

This is all very configurable but for occasional use without the learning curve the above works a treat, and there is nothing to install.

Well have downloaded the Get iPlayer software, ‘run’ it? and I now have the box as per image attached.

How do I now get from here to the prog I need to record please?

Not certain what happened to the image but the bottom line reads

        C:\Users\David>_

you probably have a web pvr gui if you look in the program list too – saying that I never use it. From that command window prompt easiest way is to find the url of the program on the iplayer website and then type:

get_iplayer -g “http://xxxxxxx” but obviously with your url

You don’t need the quote marks but they don’t hurt.

If you didn’t set an output folder when you installed it, it will be buried away and is worth changing. Say you want to store the videos in “C:\VIDEO” then before you download the tv program type

get_iplayer –prefs-add –output “C:\VIDEO” (with the quote marks).

The pref changes are permanent, a couple of others I use are

          get_iplayer –prefs-add –no purge (stops a 30 day timeout)

get_iplayer –prefs-add –fatfilename (tidies up filenames)

          get_iplayer –prefs-add –whitespace (ditto)

There is a full set of documentation here (note that some functionality like live tv recording no longer works)

Also a support archive here and a forum here.

To all of my friends here – just a short post to say thank you very much for the input on this topic. I was able to download and record the programme they wanted yesterday evening and all seems to be 100% – just might  need to edit it a bit to get rid of the dross (all of it as far as I am concerned – but then I’ll never go to Welsh Heaven – too lonely!!).

Many thanks indeed to you all.
