One of my customers recieved one of these this morning and I can understand it would worry some with a password showing. See link https://www.hoax-slayer.net/fake-blackmail-sextortion-scam-emails-using-real-passwords/

July 27, 2018 at 11:04 am #23548Assuming his password was not in a Rainbow Table (i.e. too short and common) then he may have had it pinched during one of the many Yahoo debacles or one of the more recent password hauls. One good idea is to use Have I Been Pwned’ (link) every now and again as unfortunately you cannot really trust any site too much.
Obviously if you find your password, change it PDQ!
July 27, 2018 at 11:30 am #23549The attached write up made it very clear that the criminals have no real data, they are ‘armed ‘with an old password that may well have been orphaned off years ago and an e-mail address. they have then stuffed this limited information with a tasty filling of fantasy. In my case I would be interested to know who any video could be created with one webcam being in a cupboard and the other being a close up viewing tool to use on waste pipes for checking out drain blockages, that is boxed up in a cupboard.
However, that is not the point, by putting in one or two given ‘facts’, they have an e-mail address and a sometime used password they hope that the fear factor might trick the punter into forgetting the rest is fantasy and pay up to see what it is all about.
Except that there is nothing to see anyway.
I am not sure that password length/complexity is relevant in such a case. It is very likely that some site got data diarrhoea and spewed the good bad and the ugly, anyway.
