So, computers have come a hell of a long way in the past 20 years and one of the main reasons for uptake in the early days was free pornography.

Could the main reason for Robot development and AI be the sex robot.

As you say sex drives a lot of commercialism, and sex robots MIGHT be a good thing if they keep perverts away from real humans. They could however have quite the opposite bad effect – I guess time will tell.

At the moment I find their appearance mildly terrifying and reminiscent of Chucky from Childs Play..

This is not just weird, it’s way out in sexual fantasyland. There is no substitute for a real live woman, doesn’t matter how realistic they make these things. Which is what they are – things. The people making them are already well into deviancy IMO, they will probably make big money from other deviants. Their biggest problem is that there are 66 muscles and untold different expressions, to the average human face. Replicating that will be impossible with current technology.

No not at all, I’ve already has ideas about that to. Radio Rentals springs to mind. In the days gone people have taken there TV’s to one of the many Tv rentals store for a service/repair or to even hire. Why not do the same for the Robots? Any one who has one will not mind walking down the high street to there local “service center” with there sex robot. Could even do a side line in carryalls.

Mind you I am sure Maplins, Currys etc… will jump on that idea. ?
