I figured I would see if some one on the forum is considering replacing their speakers.

I have some Bowers and Wilkins 606 for sale (nicely worn in an no signs of damage ). These are the bigger book shelf and strangely because they are bigger they can work with a smaller amp. But not less than 40w imo.

In a nut shell then: Great highs ( no, Dzzzsshhh ear burn) astonishing mids (vocal tastic) Bass ( plenty) but a little fat.

So kind of a HiFi meets entertainment speaker. Anyway, £250 inc PAP.

Sorry – they would be wasted on me. Too many years working in high decibel, high frequency environments mean that I’m now just barely a Lo-Fi man!

TBH I think most things are Lo-Fi.

So with speakers you get to shake the room a lot and with head phones you get to here all the hidden stuff.

A good bench mark track for both is by 10CC, I’m Mandy fly me. With cans in the first 25 seconds you can hear a man shouting (ever so faint) and if you can hear him shouting with speakers, then you must have the best speakers in the world.

So yeah, its all Lo-Fi for speakers.

I have a DB app on my phone and it is terrific, DB move up the scale crazy huh, some thing to do with the multiplier in the equation. The difference between 90DB and 93 is bonkers. After that turn it back down.

Not wanting to prejudice your sale but they would be no good for me either. I can only tell they are not right when they are really bad. As an ex choirboy, Halleluja Chorus, Te Deum, Magnificat, Nymphs & Shepherds etc I would have thought that I really ought to be able to tell.

My speakers are Richer Sounds RS3 bookshelf speakers bought from their shop at London Bridge Walk back in 1980 for £49.

I also made a pair of floor standing triangular speakers by following a magazine article. Travelled up to Wilmslow Audio by train from Oxford to get the speakers & crossovers. They lasted well until a mate cajoled me into lending them to him for his wedding reception & blew them up.

IIRC, Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd used to be the de facto test record.

Yeah. Hi-Fi can be scary stuff in that you spend a fortune and it sounds no better than your parents waltham.

I always fancied making some speakers. One heck of a lot of it is in the cabinet huh?. But as for amplifiers, no thanks.

Your reply sent me down an Internet rabbit hole, as I realized that I knew very little about any Amplifiers except Class D  DSP amps. I didn’t even know what a class D amplifier meant other than it gave a very reasonable low cost LoFi output for my Pi setups.

What a rabbit hole! I never knew just how many different types of amplifier exist. All the way from Class A right through to Class T. If you ever do want to build your own setup including an amp then Class T looks the way to go as this DSP amp apparently  combines simplicity, power efficiency and low distortion comparable with the best Class A-B transistor driven amps.

If you too want to wander down the Amp rabbit hole, this is the link I finished on.

                  You want rabbit holes?

The problem with anything Hi Fi nowadays is that it is all heavily tainted with s**t. On another forum I frequent, we have a VERY long running thread entitled “Audiophoolery”. £10,000 for a gold plaited unidirectional 13A FUSE!!!!!!

You don’t need much physics to see the total nonsense of it all. But so many gullible phools get sucked in to the bu*****t. But the more they spend, the happier they are, knowing the sound from their ‘speakers is better than it was before.

Anybody wanting any HiFi stuff, should look at the higher end stuff, mostly Japanese, of 35 to 40 years ago. Search out good used stuff, and don’t look back, and close your ears tight to any advice offering you “improvements”.

                  Les.

There are some Audiophiles who reckon that the purest reproduction of musical sound only comes from valve amplification!! There is such a huge variance of theories, but it all boils down to what best suits your ears and their ability to hear.

I remember years ago 1980s there was a live album by ACDC and it was rebound for taking out either your amp or your speakers or both.

It had a whole lot of Rossie on it and shes got the jack, but I dunno what its tittle was.
