I have a very old Carrvas sat nav, you can’t update it. I hang on to it as it talks a lot ie when approaching a junction it talks to me what lane to get in. This is ideal as I don’t watch it. I purchased a new Sat Mav and tried it out today. When I came to a 2 lane junction it never spoke to me which lane to get in (it showed on the map straight ahead) also it never said bear left/rght etc.
It did say turn left just after I entered the straight on lane, it should have said turn left befor entering the lanes
It doesn’t help with many towns having new road layouts ie M6 J10 will soon be a nightmare.
With that I will continue to use my Carrvas, although I need an updated one. I asked the internet I tried to read specs on some but none seem to say anything about what I am looking for.
Any help appreciated
Cheers
JohnJuly 1, 2021 at 9:46 am #68329Not heard of Carvass before, but there are some new ones on ebay.
They seem to be aimed at lorries and trucks, so maybe that’s why they have good audio instructions.
Either that or Which? have some good articles on SatNavs HERE. They have a ‘half price first month for £5’ offer on, but just remember to cancel before the next month as they automatically renew at full price.
July 1, 2021 at 7:04 pm #68330I use my old windows phone. It has a genuine full blown in built sat nav.
I take it with me and use it daily minus any cellular connection.
I have tested it against my android phone and it comes out on top every time. It does make me wonder just what info its getting from the gps satellite. you may be able to get one for a couple of quid of the ebay.
July 1, 2021 at 7:21 pm #68331Here maps is a great stand alone sat nave app for android.
If I’m leaving a footy game or theme park, I’ll use that over Google maps (google has the best lane guidence bar non), I’ll use it because it will choose a slightly different route everyone else it taking. It’s a great life hack, but in all honesty, Here maps is very good, and you don’t need data.
July 2, 2021 at 6:20 am #68333Thanks JayCee not sure about monthly charges, I never knew you had to pay a sub on some. I keep studying your link.
Thanks Keith it’s a standalone I need, not phone I don’t use mobile data, only in home router and can’t find GPS in home
Thanks Duke I have looked on ebay, they seem to say about lanes on the map nothing mentions talking lanes.
I did purchase one off amazon it was goodish but when I came to an island/junction it never said (in voice) which lane to use, the missus said it’s showing the route on the map. I returned it and set out to find one that I need.
It’s a struggle god knows how the blind get on if they can’t find a talkative nav.
Cheers

Hi John, I wasn’t meaning for SatNavs, I meant the subscription to Which?. 👍 As for how the blind manage? – I rather hope they wouldn’t be driving…….., but with some road users I’ve come across, I’m just not so sure!!!!🤔🤣
July 4, 2021 at 8:09 am #68336I see what you mean on subs.
Road users?
Cheers

Other drivers, cyclists and pedestrians – I sometimes wonder just how good their eyesight is after some of the stunts they’ve pulled. London drivers ( and most big towns really ) especially seemed to have tunnel vision, – it only mattered what was directly in front of them!!
