Sorry for all the edits on the previous post – they were done for clarity and to correct a memory lapse! (I got carried away in that I originally talked about chopping the cable and running standard A/C cable between the ends, something I used on a different camera). Ignore the aside about only using one end of the Foscam cable – that was for yet another set-up!

Bottom line for others do not waste your money on ridiculously expensive DC cable, there are easy ways around the problem – A/C cable and weatherproof chocolate boxes solve a lot of problems.

So as mentioned, bought the power extension 2x at £9 each and shocking postage. They turned up and was the wrong fitting. So I whent down to my local little electrical shop “I spend a lot of time there lately having a natter or buying bit’s n bob” anyhow, I had him make me one up. It took him 10 mins and cost a £5. I never learn, Local independent shop before I start buying of the net. Got 4 powerline network jobies for £40 while down there. :good:

So, got the camera set-up and I view it through the browser on a windows machine as you have to install windows specific plugins. My question is, is there a windows program I can use instead of the browser, and same for android to. Linux one i tried, the common one that is but forgot its name did not place a laucher in mint and I’m in an endless loop of trying to install, it installs, no launcer, try and install again because apparently not installed, install ok again, no launcher etc…

Do you still just want to view, or do you want to do anything like recording?

You can use VLC to view, I believe I gave a link to create the url it needs to access the RTSP feed in an earlier post.

Blue Iris is popular (but not free) if you want to record and a Synology NAS will do it too.

Linux I gave up on but Zoneminder looks worth a go.

The supplied Foscam software is OK and is easy enough to use for one camera recording. For some reason I have found it difficult to set it up with multiple cameras but it is probably me making wrong assumptions on how it works. Foscam can be set up in motion detect mode and is quite frugal with disk space in that mode, it has a built in viewer that can also act as a local server so output can be viewed by almost anything.

Well I tried everything to get my foscam working on linux, tried every feed/address possible in vlc and tried every bit of linux software out there, days of waisted time! I installed the foscam client software on my win machines that came on the cd with the camera and it works well there and as I was doing that I had some inspiration 🙂 WINE ! And it worked. Chucks an error up every time I start it but it does works great none the less. :yahoo:  :yahoo:  :yahoo:  :yahoo:

I thought you meant you’d taken to drinking wine like us soft southerners.

Believe me I need something stronger than that after a couple of days with foscam/linux :negative: I think it’s this particular model of camera that’s the problem but atleast I have a work around, just need to get some PC’s with a little bit of go in them now as wine seems to slow things down somewhat and general day to day tasks are getting ever mire strenuous on my old machines all leading to stronger drink needed in the near future  .

Got me one of these “Just the one for now” intended to see what the cat is up to while I’m out. I was also hoping to place one looking out of the window but the glare does it no favors.

Putting a camera behind a window never works, especially when the IR turns on.

I’ve just got one of http://tinyurl.com/kwobaa4 to test the two way audio and one of these to test the motorized vari-focal (ignore those prices).

I’ve also got one of these gathering dust if anyone wants it. If I can remember where it is…

@ricedg – Hi Dave – wouldn’t mind that at all, please. What do you want for it?? It would either go outside as a door monitor/security for the car on the front, or out back with the dogs!!:)

Sure, but bear in mind it’s indoors only. £15 inc postage would do it.

I also have some AXIS M1054 if anyone’s interested. These are proper business orientated jobs: 720P, multiple H264 streams, PoE (inc PSU as well), PIR sensor and illumination LED, Microphone and speaker, I/O port

The i/o port is basically a 2 wire affair with voltage either on or off. It’s used to trigger say a light or siren or a solenoid.

It can also play prerecorded sounds clips, comes with a barking dog and this one (vid clip) or you can do your own.

I’d want £50 each + p&p for them though (£300+ 3 years ago, as are their replacements now). They are ONVIF compatible so picture wise will work with most any NVR or software (no problem with my Hikvision NVR). Manual here

That’s a bummer – both options are outdoors:(. Shame. Thanks for the offer Dave, but maybe another forumite could use it. I have zero need indoors.

I’d like a couple of those please Dave. Did PM you but obviously got it wrong.
