The cheap way would be to take out a basic photo shop sub, do your photos in that month, then cancel. Iirc about £10 it will cost.

PS may be expensive if you don’t use it often, but 10-20£ jumping in and out to fix a batch of historical photos would be cheap at 10 times the cost. So in thst respect. The subscription model works for us that just dabble.

Now if gimp has a similar pluggin/feature then that’s the way to go. But cos I learnt PS first, I just can’t get onboard with Gimp. I’ve tried many times

Thanks EdP and Steve, that sounds like an option. Whether I’ll need it much is moot, as most of the over 30 years old photos are either black and white, or just drunken attendees at my weekly parties. Nothing of a serious note that needs remembering,………..if you know what I mean………!!

I do have a few photos that came with a problem, an horizontal orange hue across 90% of the photo – family members and setting still visible. A note that they came when they were developed suggested an out of date film!! That will be worth trying PS on, as it was Mum and Dad’s 50th Wedding Anniversary.

I got away with it, after a battle. The Elvis photo was a B&W shot taken from the ’68 US TV Comeback Special. It always looked odd, he was surrounded by an American audience, some of whom look indifferent, because it was “in the Round” and these were behind him, looking at the camera. The only damage was to the outside fringes, so I cut the whole thing to fit just The King into the black border of a 12″ x 12″ Wilko’s frame. It now looks better than it did before, just himself in black biker jacket.

I love it when a plan comes together better than I first envisaged it!??

Steve, I use IrfanView to edit and print my main photos. I use Google for others. here’s one from Mablethorpe RNLI Station:

Steve’s talk of Gimp reminded me of Paint.Net, apparently that has some worthwhile colour correction abilities. (it will also run the older Photoshop Plug-ins (I don’t know wrt recent ones)). Try it — free to use and it really is much better than Gimp! link

If the photos are > 30 years old then you will almost certainly want to colour correct the blues and greens before archiving. It can be a long painstaking job. Photoshop and Corel Paintshop Pro have plug-ins to ease the pain. Tbh I do not know a cheap/free way of doing it.

Scan them with an Epson ?

I scanned some old photos for the wife’s grandfather last week, and there’s a big difference when you use the colour correct setting (I can’t remember the exact name as the program’s on the laptop).

The original’s on the left. I’ve cut out faces etc. just in case

This is what I made of the Elvis photo: imagine it as larger, not squared-off and the King surrounded by miserable American faces (because they were seated behind him in the Cheap Seats)

I will add a legend as a title above the pic: have just finished cheapo white undercoat to new plaster, returning to next coat now. My team is losing, so I’m off…???
