A new name is going to be required for Petrol-Heads now that the marque beloved by petrol-heads like Clarkson et al are going ‘green’. Jaguar Landrover has just announced that by 2020 they will no longer make vehicles powered solely by burning hydrocarbons. Their announcement just adds to the growing list of expensive car makers that are going to go electric/hybrid.
So a new descriptive adjective is going to be required for the old breed of petrol heads. ‘Plug-head’?

September 7, 2017 at 2:45 pm #11449The yanks use gearhead, even that has issues as lots (all?) pure electric cars use a CVT transmission or something very similar.
Electric cars are the future but the infrastructure will take probably 15 years or more to put in place.

It all seemed to be moving along slowly, adaptation by adaption, improvement by improvement, but in the next few years, it’s going to be major changes coming by 2020.
September 7, 2017 at 5:06 pm #11467That’s right JCD, nothing will happen all at once. Atm, every time some manufacturer comes out with a new electric vehicle, or a project for one, the same nay – sayers moan “No infrastructure!” Of course there isn’t the infrastucture yet, but this is an idea whose time is rapidly approaching and the infrastucture will be built. Probably later in the UK than almost everywhere else, but it will have to happen.
Incidentally, as a rather loose connection. The Texas and Carribean hurricanes and the tremendous, horrific amount of damage, loss of life, huge rebuilding cost and homelessness, may finally convince The Trumper that Global Warming is man-made and is real.
And that the increase in the size, force and number of seriously bad weather effects across the world (including hurricanes) is down to man-made Global Warming.
Or maybe nothing will convince him, until the White House is underwater.

September 7, 2017 at 7:17 pm #11474Lots of infrastructure is already in place (see map). I reckon there are now almost as many charging points as there are Service Station outlets. Unlike petrol you can even have a refuelling point in your house and if you have solar panels your mileage is very low cost, albeit a 40Kwh battery could be charging most of the day.
Imo the biggest drawback was lack of range for a reasonable price, but the Renault Zoe with a rated 200+miles (real road driving range) changed all that. Hybrids of course do not have range limitations as such, The only problem with a hybrid is that the otherwise outstanding mpg gets completely eroded when pedal to the metal takes over and electric+petrol acceleration is fully used.
September 7, 2017 at 7:28 pm #11478The recharge time is a big issue also.
Ed, that map is inaccurate, at least in my area. There are at least 2 other charging points within 1/4 mile of the Renault dealership, both at other car franchises. Trouble is they run their own payment systems so you need multiple payment systems if you’re going to drive any kind of real distance. Also there are very few properties near me where you can plug a vehicle in safely. Most don’t have secure off road parking.
I can imagine the anger after having plugged your car in to charge on a street to find out that some drunk/kid/arse has unplugged it for the sake of it!
September 7, 2017 at 8:00 pm #11484Well someone thinks 2019/2020 will be the time in the UK – Tesla will start making RHD versions.
He’s a pretty amazing guy – I’ve just been browsing the Tesla site and have just seen the smartest looking solar installation HERE. Realistic looking roof tiles that are actually mini-solar panels!! And just look at their warranty!!
September 8, 2017 at 9:47 pm #11522Can’t find any near me, two comments locally:
” I have just emailed East Lindsey Council who cover Skegness and most of the East Coast and to see wether or not they are installing EV chargers in the future and they said they weren’t due to being low demand for such things.
I know for sure a lot of EV drivers will go to the east coast if they could Rapid or slow charge throughout the day! If you all wouldn’t mind sending an email to the council to request such chargers to be installed it would help the EV community greatly and hopefully get some action going on the eastern front! ”
And…
” Lincolnshire is spectacularly bad for rapid charge stations. Gonerby Hill Foot (almost Nottinghamshire) on the A1 has two courtesy of Ecotricity, there is a broken one at Trenton Nissan, Tetney 71 miles away and that’s all folks. Not good for any county, but when you’re the second largest county in England its… well its embarrassing. Skeggy isn’t going to get one when Lincoln hasn’t any. ”
Our ELDCouncil is spectacularly slow to emerge into the 20th century, never mind the 21st. If agricultural machinery were EV’s, there would be charging points everywhere. We are bottom of the heap for everything: roads, transport, health, you name it.
