I had an email from Paypal about new user when we leave the EU.
Click this link, click that link (link after link). ???????
How does it affect my use of PayPal, should I close my PayPal.
Cheers
JohnDecember 28, 2020 at 8:18 pm #64970It’s more than likely a scam John.
Is it from PayPal? Lots of the scammers spoof headers in emails and when you click on ‘show details’ (depends on your email provider) you get something like minjjjghju@scamminggit.com
If your not sure just log into PayPal and see if you have any notifications there.
December 29, 2020 at 12:31 am #64974John – on PayPal’s website – HERE – they say that the new T’s and C’s are because of Brexit. On Jan 1 the UK will be out of Europe and will need a differing set of conditions.
So long as the email is ‘personally’ addressed, ie it includes your user name, it generally means it’s from them. The ones you have to watch out for are the ones that start ” Dear PayPal user……” – they’re the scams.
My card expired recently and the details needed updating, the email I got was to me – named.
December 29, 2020 at 7:20 am #64976John, log into your PayPal account directly yourself, don’t click on any links. If they need you to do something you will be prompted to do it when you log in.
I haven’t had an email and I’ve just logged into PayPal and nothing waiting for me to do, so I suspect your email may be dodgy.
Whilst you’re there I’d set up two factor verification, your mobile phone will be used to give you a unique code to use when you log in:
- Go to Settings (cog wheel).
- Click Security.
- Next to ‘2-step verification’, click Edit.
- Choose to receive a text or use an authenticator app, then click Next.
- Follow the prompts to link your phone or authenticator app.
- Set up a back-up method in case you can’t access your primary cell or authenticator app.
- Click Done to activate 2-step verification.
Personally I use Google’s authenticator app (it produces a 6 digit code that changes every minute) but if you’re more comfortable with a text message that’s fine.
December 29, 2020 at 7:43 am #64978Others have given you excellent advice. I always view the email headers for anything involving money or similar. You will often find in cases of scams that the original sender is totally different from what it first appears to be.
If it does turn out to be a scam, report it to PayPal. They seem to take such scams seriously unlike many Banks and ISPs.
December 29, 2020 at 8:30 am #64980Thanks PM, JayCee it’s personally’ addressed to me, Dave I logged in and it looks as normal. I can’t see any prompts.
I click on the wheel it takes me to profile, at the bottom I click on Security link, I can’t see 2-step verification
I will have another look.
Cheers Ed.
