I recently got me a 1.7 diesel chevrolete cruise 2013.

Nice all round car but on take off 11mph and at start up only there is a small crind noise like a poor shift on a small motor bike. This only happens once at start up take off 11mph.

Ive had a jolly good nose but cannot pin it down.

Any of you guys got a tangable astra 1.7 (Same engine) 2012 0nward. Does your car make said small nock grind sound on take off 11mph at start up.

Any one got any ideas. 🙂

If its a manual, is it when you change gear ?

If its an auto then 11 mph is about right for a change into 2nd on a 5 speed box.

I have a 2011 1.7 zafira and don’t have any noise. The 1.7 isuzu engine has been going for years in 1 form or another our mk3 cavalier had an early version of it. The only problem I have had with it is the egr valve which seems to be a common thing on these later engines. The vauxhall “specialist” I bought mine off said it was his biggest selling item for the 1.7

Looks from Mark‘s link, like a common problem on that engine Keith. The fact that he doesn’t have it may be the exception.

I remember from some years ago, a mate having an Isuzu pickup, same 1.7 engine and he had gearbox trouble, a 5-speed manual IIRC. Can’t remember exactly what the specific problem was, but I do know he also had the Isuzu in and out of a garage until he got fed up and sold it. Last I heard he was running a Nissan Navara.

Graham (WoF) he said it was a manual 6 speed.

Today I decided to reverse the car 11+ mph before moving forward and there was no small grind noise when reversing and when moving forward also no small grind noise????

Bob. I see its a 6 speed manual now. Our posts crossed while I was typing.

Its a pity too because I have an idea for the older 5 speed manual but nothing for the 6 speed ?

Clutch went bad, at first reverse was hard to engage, quick degraded so I could not get into any gear, mechanic found almost no wear on clutch plates. Dual clutch system cost $700-1000. I wonder if it’s clutch-connected? Does it have a hydraulically-operated clutch? Maybe master or slave cylinder leaking? Check pedal operation, is it hard or soft? I do know that those dual-clutch systems can be pigs, hope for your wallet’s sake the clutch is OK. After speaking with an old gearbox guru on the phone, I learned that the 6-speed box began life in the petrol models, 1.8 and 2.0 litre. It was introduced into the diesel Cruze later. E bay is full of gearbox parts and whole boxes for them.

If you find a cause and a solution, plz let me know.

The noise imo has nothing to do with the cluch. It just happens at 11mph on first vehicle movment. It sounds like something is engaging else where. Water pump maybe. Any way seeing a guy tonight with the same motor. So we can collate engine noises.

Lol, yer not gonna beleive this but its an inherant charatoristic of the engine. Some thing to do with euro emisson regulatons.

Still I can sleep in my bed sound now. 🙂

Keep your eye on the egr valve ours started making funny crunchy clicky type noises on start up when it started to go bad (might be worth taking it off and giving it a clean dirty job though). Normal operation is more of a whirring noise when turning the ignition on. I should of mentioned it in my previous post but probably had a few too many to remember.

I believe it Keith, just ought to be a warning in the handbook about it. Guaranteed to make any driver worry, if they hadn’t known about it.

I hate daft noises in cars, goes back to customers with “There’s a funny squeak/rattle/whine/grind/graunch somewhere. Can you find it and fix it?” Me driving, young mech with better hearing crawling around the inside of the car, listening. 60% of the time it was untraceable. Sometimes it was down to something left in the boot, door pocket or glove box. Once a ‘flapping noise’ was a big piece of thick plastic stuck to the exhaust and whacking the chassis. I could see it as he drove up the drive into the workshop, had to inwardly question his eyesight: why can he not see that? Should he be driving?

Had a funny tiss tiss tiss noise in one of my Mini’s once. The engine started to run rough too.

Turns out the over flow hose had come off the carb float chamber at some point and now the float valve had got stuck so petrol was dripping straight onto the exhaust manifold. Tiss tiss tiss ?

Last week my daughter finally past her driving test and within the hour she was on the phone to ask about our old car. So the Jazz is now hers and reciprocating back and forth between her home and Addenbrooke Hospital where she works. It has probably done already done another 300 miles. So it is well into its second hundred thousand miles.

This left me with the ‘new car’ in which we went to see our younger daughter in her assisted living quarters. That all went well until it came to starting up for the return journey when the damned thing decided that it wanted a change, or at least confirmation of the language. Not what I needed and with no obvious way to back out of its demands it ended up labelling everything in Spanish. The handbook was about as much use as a chocolate fireguard when it came to correcting this errant behaviour, though once back home a little hunt and peck finally allowed me to track down the well hidden route back to language sanity. At least it had used conventional Western European lettering rather than Russian, Arabic Chinese or something similar.
