My mate is a local go-to man for anyone and produces the newsletters for several local volunteer bodies (all running costs met by donations – paper, ink, sundries etc.).

He has asked if I can update the PC he uses for this in any way. as it is now a little long in the tooth.

I’ve had a quick look and it has a recently donated 120 SSD plus a 500 spinner.

I’ve got a reasonable HD4670 graphics card to replace its onboard graphics.

It has an Intel board which has 4 DDR2 slots with 4 x 1GB PC-6400 sticks in.

It will take a max of 8GB (4 x 2GB), but I don’t have any spare 2GB sticks for it.

Just wondering if anyone has got anything suitable in their spares boxes.

      Hopefully 😊

You didn’t say what operating system the PC is running?     Given its vintage I presume it might still be Windows 7.     If that is so then make sure its the 64bit version because if its the 32bit then adding extra ram will do not good and you are maxed out already; any more will not be seen.

TBH if the guy’s use is pretty much WP/DTP and given that it already has an SSD plus a spinner for storage then any thing you add to it may not even be noticed by him in normal use.    So it might make sense to start managing his expectations in advance to avoid disappointment.

It is running Windows 10 Pro, so a RAM upgrade is the only real improvement you can do. He has no real “expectations”, but is just trying to make the machine as good as it can get.  Surprisingly it has only had about 4 years usage even though it is a 775 board with a Q8400 in.

It was originally donated by a local firm which had it as a totally unused backup rig for 5 years. I then upgraded it 7 to 10 for him. He will be happy if it runs another 5 years – producing these newsletters keep him occupied and out from under his wife’s feet 😀

                Dave, many thanks.

I already have 3 x 1GB 5300 and 4 x 1GB 6400 sticks in the spares box, but they won’t improve what is currently in there.

Whatever 2GB 800 DS you can spare would be much appreciated.

                    Excellent Dave,

Presuming you are still at residing at No. 19 ? ……… I’ll put a prepaid jiffy bag off in the post to you tomorrow.

In the same vein as “sat there for years”, I must have found nearly 100 sticks of DDR 2100/2700/3200 (desktop/laptop) in a box in the garage which I can’t remember seeing since the noughties?? 😆

Anyone have any use for it ?

I have just been given (2x2GB) sticks of DDR3 from a mate who has upgraded his system. “No good to me, see if you can find a good home.” Anyone want these? –

                              Crucial CT25664BA 1339A    240 Pin DIMM 1339A.

Still working perfectly in the old system when pulled. Anti static wrapped, well padded. Will post and ask P&P only.
