Well, its good to see the forum back. TBH I thought It had closed down as its real quite now days.
So, back to topic. NVIDIA will be releasing the 4000 series GPU this year, and rumor has it that the 4090ti will draw between 600 and 800 watts.
Obv’s that’s nuts and not the real world.
Apparently its because the die is massive and the green team have not used chiplets like AMD do.
But aside from that no GPU should be allowed to draw more than 300watts. IMO.
July 26, 2022 at 7:13 am #69801I agree, the price of energy will become a massive consideration for many, though here in the UK it isn’t the underlying energy cost that hurts but the 10% Green levy, 40% connection charge and of course the Government’s 20% VAT on top!
July 26, 2022 at 9:57 am #69802Good point. But lol.
The planet is overheating and if all those bit coin nutters start setting up farms like the last boom. Then adios muchachos.
July 26, 2022 at 10:04 am #69803But, here is the real funny bit. I sent a letter to downing street explaining why that all GPU’s over 300watts should be banned for sale in the UK.
July 26, 2022 at 11:25 am #69804IMO the days of Bitcoin and Bitcoin mining are over. It has turned into a Ponzi game with very few tangible assets supporting the deemed value. It was only ever of real use to those wanting to move their money without letting Authorities know it existed. Now that Governments have cottoned on to ways of tracking such funds, even the criminals are cautious in using Bitcoins.
A corporate Treasurer once explained to me that there is no such thing as money, just a belief that the IOU you have will easily be passed on to someone else in exchange for something of use. Inflation happens when people stop believing that the IOU will be honored for that value. Sterling has lost about half its value under the innovation averse stewardship of Conservative Chancellors of the Richi Sunak ilk.
July 26, 2022 at 12:26 pm #69805of Conservative Chancellors of the Richi Sunak ilk.
I am very confused by these TV debates going on between said candidates for the top job.
Where is the point, when we dont get to pick the next PM. Total Bollox to me. Fu@$ked up TV. Some times with I had a couple of exocests to aim at the big boys and get journalism reset.
When ever I see sunak on the TV on the camping trail and where is the point? I just see people around him in the crowd that look like him. Whats that all about? I really hope he dont get the job as he is as daft as borris or worse.
July 26, 2022 at 2:32 pm #69806Agreed again, but my main reason for disliking Sunak is that his wife has more assets than the Queen, Without doubt he is the wealthiest Conservative. Not only is he completely out of touch with the concerns of the electorate, I just cannot see him taking tax decisions that would impinge on his wealth, and I’m afraid that as a country that has got in the deep poo, it is necessary to share the pain, not smack the ones who have got nothing. (e.g. fuels duty and National Insurance).
I’m sorry but I have no trust in either Sunak or Truss. None of them are proposing to INVEST in innovation, and completely reject selling off our few remaining technology crown jewels. Brexit nearly killed the City of London, and we now need to build something other than the Financial Sector for the future. R&D plus Entrepreneurial risk taking should be the way forward. We should outlaw outsourcing to India etc as this just exports our technology and intellectual property. (Sunak would never agree to this!)
July 26, 2022 at 4:02 pm #69808Yep, all agreed and Sunak and his overwhelmingly rich family for landfill.
Them at the bottom buried under their money. 🙂
July 26, 2022 at 5:25 pm #69809If you were glad to be rid of the “Grey Lady” Theresa May, don’t be holding out any false hopes for Liz Truss, you’re gonna get more of the same from her. The minute anybody tries to get past her ‘headline quotes’ for any detail, she doesn’t have it. If I hear how she will take advantage of the ‘Post-Brexit Opportunities’ one more time I’m going to lose my lunch!!
However, in the next debate there has to be a better moderator to keep things flowing and under control because Sophie Raworth failed miserably. No jumping in over Rishi’s continual talking over and interrupting, no chasing Liz to expand on her by-lines and no switching off the microphones when either one doesn’t play by the rules. The first one last night was more of a stampede than a debate. Rishi came out best, but couldn’t be said to have won the debate!!
July 27, 2022 at 9:46 am #69810Debate, debate, debate.
I cannot be doing with all this mass debating.
July 27, 2022 at 4:18 pm #69811To make it a bit more interesting, you could keep a list of all the promises, then see how many the ‘Winner’ keeps or breaks before the 2024 General Election. BoJo pretty much broke all his Brexit promises!
July 28, 2022 at 9:02 am #69813Back to Topic.
So, if you did not know, because of the bit coin crash the wold is now awash with GPU’s.
The price of GPU’s is almost in free fall to and below the mrrp. For new this is especially true of the high end cards, but still way to expensive in every way and the second hand market is also moving fast down.
So I have made my move, I consider the 2nd hand market to be the most box clever move in attaining value in buying and reselling.
The card I have gone for is the Radeon RX6600XT. It ticks all the boxes for 1080p rasterization game play as it can run Red Dead Redemption and Cyberpunk277 @ constant 60fps set at highest recommended setting. Its basically x2 as powerful as my GTX1070 whilst drawing the same amount of power 160watts.
One short comings of the card in keeping power draw low is its only PCI-E 3 & 4×8 and so in my case pci-e 3 I may see a small performance hit.
Any way just have to sell my GTX1070 now and game on.
July 28, 2022 at 10:15 am #69815I cannot fault your logic, but the only problem is finding a ‘safe’ second-hand source. The thought of buying from China or Russia is fraught with potential issues, never mind the problems if the card was sent in a broken state! I guess a US or Dutch source is better but still carries a risk. Good luck with your strategy.
I’ve got a much cheaper RX3080. Obviously only half as good as the 6600XT, but good enough for me at present and only half the electricity usage!.
July 28, 2022 at 10:57 am #69816I just got the card from e-bay UK, made an offer of 250 with some BS logic plea and the guy went for it.
He is also forwarding his receipt minus his details and apparently its a few months old.
Talking about fraught with potential issues. Have you ever tried to sell on GumTree to escape e-bay charges.
GumTree is full of drunk wanna be fraudsters.
August 28, 2022 at 7:36 am #69875Apparently nVidia has a surplus of RTX-3000 chips and is reducing their price in order to shift them before the 4000 comes out.
“Jensen Huang said during the company’s Q2 2023 earnings call yesterday that the company is dealing with “excess inventory” of RTX 3000-series GPUs ahead of its next-gen RTX 4000 series release later this year. …. Nvidia has “instituted programs to price position our current products to prepare for next-generation products.”
One other factor which may drive the market is the emergence of a Chinese GPU. Its not exactly next-gen at the moment, but once the Chinese manage to copy the ASML photolithography technology they could become a formidable competitor.
September 1, 2022 at 3:30 pm #69890I couldn’t believe those PSU figures when they came out. Gaming CPU’s seem to be creeping back up too, but obviously not so drastically!
I remember visiting Tim in Spain in the Pentium days and he used to have the side off the case and a pedestal fan on full chat as close as possible. Wish I’d taken a photo now.
