      I built a PC about 2 years ago and it works perfectly, it has a 250GB SSD, a 4 TB hybrid spinner, unlocked I5 and a decent graphics card. It can get noisy playing games but lately it has started getting loud in general. I gave it a good clean but this made no difference. I was thinking of going down the water-cooling road and maybe a graphics card upgrade but this is totally new to me and wondered if anyone has any advice or can point me to any good sites for info.

      I would like it to be quieter when I play games anyway as it is in my living room.

      Or would it be better to just strip/clean the processor, apply new thermal paste and give it another thorough clean ( I didn’t clean the cooler itself last time just the fans).

        Tighten everything that is built to be tightened would be a good first step. Perversely anything going through a thermal cycle of cold->hot->cold always seems to loosen any screws and fittings!

        Noisy fans could be that the bearings are going, replace fans if required. Unbalanced fans with some crud stuck to a blade is another cause.

          Take off side panel, disconnect each fan in turn, run briefly and see if there is silence after one particular fan is disconnected. Is the case positioned up from, close to, or on, the floor? Is there space for the expelled warm air to dissipate behind the case?

          If that shows no results, I suggest you look for overheating issues, download and run this:     https://tinyurl.com/25xx66y    to check temperatures. If the CPU is overheating, it might be time for a heatsink, fan and cpu strip down, followed by a surface clean and some new thermal paste.

            Water cooling is more efficient at getting rid of a lot of heat but not necessarily any quieter as there are still fans involved.

            +1 to Bob’s advice.

              On your symptoms it sounds like the GPU fan(s) need investigation.

                  I do use earphones but my wife can’t hear the TV, lol.

                  I have been looking at the gear I bought to build the pc and it was built 5 years ago (wow, how time fly’s) and the gfx card was recycled from my last machine so that is probably 6 years old. I will do everything suggested above but I think a new gfx card is called for and I am going to look into water cooling both the GPU and CPU.

                    I have more or less decided on the MSI NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB GDDR5 OC V1 Graphics Card in the link above, now I have to look at water cooling it and my CPU.
