It’s my 41st B’day today so I thought I would share some of my latest exploits.

The first pic is some caroline reapers and hot habanero. There are 4 other plants, but I lost the label. Nonetheless, there are sure to be chilies.

In the second pic I have sage, sweet basil “which is coming through” as seen in the pics, bell peppers, cat nip, and chocolate chilies.

I got a bit of birthday money so ordered some more seeds to plant and grow indoors.

      • Bolivian Rainbow Chilli Pepper Seeds
      • WHITE GHOST CHILLI BHUT JOLOKIA / Naga Jolokia
      • Trinidad Scorpion Moruga Super Hot Chilli
      • Coriander Seeds
      • 200 x LEMON BASIL Heirloom Seeds
      • Spearmint / Garden Mint / Mentha viridis Seeds

My lawn this summer looked like the aftermath of an Atol nuke experiment from the 50’s, one of the small ones, like a 100MT hydrogen air burst. with thousands of dead personnel to the peripherals of my lawn, aka the boarder. The Dahlias love it.

But no, its come back to life duno how, its a good time to put some seed down now we are approaching October, grass grows best at about 10C.

Just about to do some re-seeding on our back lawns, one at a time or I’ll knock myself silly for a few days. Been scarifying bit by bit over the last few weeks with bags and bins full of moss and thatch. There’s still more dead moss that needs ripping out on a deep localised scarify but at least the dark patches are easier to spot against the hay!! Prior to the water shortages I had been watering and looking after the two small lawns nearest the bungalow, but left the back two to fend for themselves. Our gardening friend said that they might look very dead atm, which they did, but they are in fact just dormant, waiting for rain. That has proved to be true over the past fortnight. I’ve got 6 large bags of compost and some left over top soil to mix in and spread over the worst patches and then re-seed.

Since the ( 28 ) conifers came down to provide winter sun for our solar panels, the garden has been in a bit of a state, but at least it’s easier to deal with the lawns now they’re in the open and not having all the moisture sucked out of the ground.

Plans are to do a lot of work making the garden somewhere to sit and relax, we’ll be getting somebody in for that, my manual labour days are long gone!!

Happy Birthday, Lee – hope it was a good one

SWMBO decided we needed a new supply of fresh veggies as things were going pear-shaped with Brexit screwing up the Dutch imports. So she bought one of these (a sort of cross between hydroponics and a propagator), and started growing Pakchoi. Much to my surprise it has worked really well! As Lee shows, you don’t need a lot of space to grow veggies, and his chillies will look quite decorative.

You don’t need much at all. A bit of clingfilm over some pots will do as good as a propagator in the warmth of a house should you be able to afford warmth nowadays.

P.S, If I can get the reaper chilies going I want them in a curry. A little tidbit, did you know you can buy tobacco seeds on eBay and legally grow them? I was surprised by that after looking yesterday.

Tobacco plant flowers have a nice night-scented smell which is rather like Jasmine. When I was small, lots of people grew tobacco plants, and many sunny outhouses had lines full of drying leaves.  I suspect that the tobacco so produced was a bit rough as people stopped growing it when the economy improved.

I guess the same thing happened in the 50s-70s with home-brews – every small town and village used to have their own wine and beer making clubs. But that seemed to peter-out by the noughties. I bet we now see a resurgence of that hobby following the imminent Truss Winter of Discontent and people with very limited cash. Some of the beers and wines were quite tasty, but I do remember a Wine Club member’s very poisonous attempt to make brandy via the freezing method and someone else brewing an insecticidal ‘wine’ from African Marigold flowers.

I thought I’d have a go at some chillies this year. Grew them on from some seedlings from a friend’s daughter. Not doing too badly, the first chillies were starting to grow from the many flowers.

Then a few days later the sister-in-law asked if she could park on our drive to get the metro bus into town.

First degree chillicide! She still doesn’t know to this day she parked on the pots, just drove off. Another couple of inches and she’d have been through next doors fence.

I have made a pork and chorizo chilli with a couple that ripened and they smelled like they were going to be hot, unfortunately not. So I’m leaving them now for as long as possible, but this week is probably as far as I dare go.

This is the recipe I based the chilli on, you’ll never go back to beef chilli again. I do mix the beans up with whatever is in the cupboard, Cannellini work well, and often leave the red peppers out. It’s nice with couscous rather than rice too and freezes wonderfully.

SWMBO grew some Rainbow Chillies in a trough for the decorative effect. We never had the courage to eat them, so I’d be interested to hear if anyone ever has eaten them.

They did however look really nice (this picture links to Etsy where you can buy the seeds)

Etsy link for Rainbow chillies – apparently they are an edible medium heat chilli, and you eat them when red.

A little update. I picked two of my favorites for the camera shoot but I have lots throughout the house. The tall chap is a Hot Habanero. The short chubby guy is a Caroline Reaper. Roughly, there about 2 1/2 months old.

Unfortunately hot chillies are on the ever expanding list of foods that are off limits to me because of my damaged stomach. Gutted as I had just got the taste for them after having Covid.

Hope you have not ditched Turmeric as that is apparently really good as an anti-inflammatory. The wife does a really tasty large prawns, turmeric, coconut and rice dish. Its one of those dishes you can spice up (if you can take it) by adding lemon grass and a few chilli flakes.

Back on the indoor gardening theme apparently you can grow lemon grass indoors (BUT it can grow to 1 metre in height!)

                                      https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/herbs/lemongrass/growing-lemongrass-indoors.htm

This is one I should encourage the wife to try, as fresh lemongrass is much better than the dried up carp that is often on sale.

Ed, unfortunately turmeric also causes issues.

On the upside I was recently put onto Lactase Enzyme capsules. Means I can eat cheese without being worried about proximity to a toilet! Milk and cream is still off limits, oddly, but I was never a huge fan of them anyway.
