Mainly for businesses, I have a Zyxel Old School, simple Home NAS: nsa 310, worked very well for me for years but requiring a Hdd replacement soon, finances & SWMBO agreeing! (merely on age of Hdd, still checks out fine) It does exactly what I need, mostly backups, Media streams and such.

Take a look Dave when you have time? I value your opinion, asking for a mate in the village with a growing business, who manufactures outdoor products, quality sheds and outbuildings, fences etc. Wants to take on a dedicated IT guy, but am trying to get him to contract that to a company for a reasonable monthly charge. (Preferably my grandson’s, but leaving him a choice of 5 companies, interest declared) Also for the expanding Community Centre, which wants to expand the Village Hall and huge Playing Fields/open spaces, into more “car boots” for organisations, caravan groups etc. They would like to use the large Hall space for a Conference Centre base. School and local Nursery both expanding.

Just as I predicted to the Moaners* who complained about the 5 new Developments, mostly larger, expensive homes, New Blood has left commuting husbands with bored wives who need an interest: younger membership of the Community Centre has grown and many are former Career women. Village is about to be dragged into the 21st. century, the new members and businesses (3 more almost finished, 2 more asking permission) are aware of the need for IT assistance. Parish Council has also gained new leadership & membership from new, more people-friendly members and a Leader who actually listens to the community. One might expect protest about all this, but the Oldpharts who might take part usually cba, on the grounds that “someone else will do it.”. I  battled against these 19th century attitudes since I attended my first PC meeting in 2003, when we  moved here.

The beautiful Green spaces to the East is an AONB, the Lincolnshire Wolds**, and cannot be touched almost to the coast. Which means we can still walk about 150 yards from my door and be in the middle of miles of that, thank the Living Earth.

I can’t get the link to work Bob. I gather it’s some sort of conversation on Google?

As a file store the Zyxel would probably be fine, but it’s a home product not a business one. I would always recommend Synology NAS for businesses. Either a DS216se (which I use) or the newer DS218j.

But these things have to be looked at in the round and I would like to know what plans he has and where and how he needs to access the data. May need to think about VPNs if there’s remote access, so that means a decent router, etc. Get the building blocks right on day one 🙂

This isn’t just about recommending kit to be plugged into each other, it’s more about business processes and how to use IT to enable or enhance them. That’s where business experience comes in rather than IT knowledge.

OK, back home now. Yep that link works.

Question is why do the want one? This is a solution, what is the problem?

Dave, we have bad service to new “Superfast” Cabinet from BT in village, previously discussed. The new cab not researched for Fibre capacity, everyone lost speeds, had to go ADSL, some lost service altogether. BT OR trying to correct. I lost 11+ Mbps on FTTC, BT just cut my line from new cabinet, without telling ISP. Had to go ADSL, I get anything from 1.5 to max of 2.5. Whole village, including businesses, trying to find ways to have a good service.

Superfast is Superslow joke here. We would like to see BT CEO here, we have a lot of big trees and plenty of rope. How to make a reasonably good service unusable or just worse, BT found a way!

OK, that Zyxel won’t help I’m afraid. It pulls it’s MLPS trickery when linking to another Zyxel in a “HQ to branch” link. Even then you can’t make a silk purse out of a sows ear.

There is absolutely nothing you can do to speed things up apart from getting the community together to get a third party to link the village up. There’s a lot can be done with wireless but you need a good feed coming in somewhere that can be shared. Given the lack of hills that could be a fair distance away (measured in miles) but trees in the line of sight are bad news.

I did this for the “5 Stokes” area before BT got ADSL sorted (the aerial is still on my roof), so if you need any assistance in this I’ve been there, done it. It’s a lot easier now!

Thanks Dave, actually movement by Openreach today: last night sometime in early hours, internet was down in my side of the village, off until about 11:30 this am. Tried to reach ISP Plusnet by phone, 20 minutes forecasted wait, Chatline worse. It came back on to 1.5 Mbps Download, which advanced later to 2.8 Mbps. There were 2 OR vans at old and new cabinets, about a Km apart, made me think they are finally disconnecting old and reconnecting new. I may soon (?) get FTTC back. Parish, District and County Councils all fighting for us with BT, must be having impact. Local Tory MP sees no Media Mileage as she will not apply any pressure for us. Ex-barrister, uses Media to publicise her work on carefully chosen causes.

I understand the absolute irrelevance of Zyxel layout as you you describe it, to our situation. We have the Wolds hills above us and the area is full of trees: signal is non existent and if I did not have the EE Brightbox, connecting to router via Ethernet, we would have no signal. With that, I even get 4G. So when internet is down, we have zilch, it’s a double-edged sword. There is also an organisation called OnLincolnshire, supposedly working to get better broadband services for the County. Seems to be based mostly to help the bigger towns here: rural gets crumbs. At the last local Parish meeting, I had a discussion with their rep, only to find that I knew more than he did! Came totally unprepared, another Council Quango I think. We will get there in the end, I think.
