Graham at least you managed it
Cheers
JohnOctober 28, 2019 at 2:08 pm #37819Sorry its been such a chore John – it worked relatively easy for me (static IP, share the folders, set user permissions) but can understand why you want to give up! As a poor man’s version of Dave’s idea, if your router supports USB storage then an hdd connected to your router’s usb could be a cheap “NAS” – especially if you have a usb hdd already.
I still think its a shame as you want to move files, rather than share them, but maybe worth a try if your router supports it?
October 28, 2019 at 2:37 pm #37820If it’s for moving files rather than permanently sharing them then there’s nothing wrong with the copy to USB drive then plug in and copy to other PC. I do this all the time with customers PCs and always have a decent sized USB drive in the workshop.
Sometimes easiest is best. As Steve says you could probably have it done by the time you’ve figured out all the twists and turns of Windows. I do it so I don’t have a chain of things to undo on the customers PCs. Also I prefer working with a copy of customers data rather than with it directly. Been there, deleted that 😵
October 28, 2019 at 2:43 pm #37821Thanks I will stick with USB stick, I now have both with USB 3 so it shouldn’t take long. I just wanted to use potential, but no easy potential around windows got worse.
Cheers
JohnOctober 28, 2019 at 2:59 pm #37822Back to sneaker net !
October 28, 2019 at 3:03 pm #37823In case you never heard of it it was the practice of transferring a floppy between computers on foot 😁
October 28, 2019 at 3:29 pm #37824Graham: 👍😁👍
John I think your system would really benefit from either a cheap ‘n’ cheerful NAS, or as BL advises, an external Hdd connected to your router. What router do you have?
Personally, one of the best (if not the best) computing moves I made, was to listen to my IT worker grandson and buy a simple Zyxel nsa 310, several years ago, and setup Network Sharing, with streaming between devices (don’t know how that’s done with 10). Recently refreshed the NAS with a 2 TB Hdd and I can backup anything on the network, stream between devices and find music, videos and pics on any device, all from the NAS.

I'm out.October 28, 2019 at 8:00 pm #37832I did look at the one Dave suggested, I would only use bsic so it’s not worth me buying one give me back XP I did it on that, lots often said why use XP now?
In fact I am using some USB 3.0 drives as we speak to transfer.
Cheers
JohnOctober 29, 2019 at 9:20 am #37837I really do not understand M$’s rationale for moving from the ‘simple’ Windows 7 sharing set up to something that does ‘share’ anywhere near as easily. I find at times that I tear my hair out as Win10 does not detect all the Windows machines on my network!
It is hard for me to see why a pseudo-corporate level security is required for a SOHo set-up.
October 29, 2019 at 11:57 am #37843My guess would be that their strategy is to “dumb down” home users and push them towards “the cloud” where it is easier to monetise things.
Agree completely that MS networking is a mess, my laptop detects different things on different days (when the circumstances are exactly the same). It normally detects my linumx STB but other windows decvices is hit or miss.
That said having set it all up I am able to share between the Windows devices, the STB and mobile Android and IOS devices by specifying the IP of each device. It has gone backwards in terms of implementation but it does work (Ipad is a bit different – can push to windows OK but from windows to Ipad have to run a FTP server on the Ipad)
October 29, 2019 at 2:02 pm #37844Can you not get push bullet for ios? I’m tot versed in apple stuff.
October 29, 2019 at 2:13 pm #37848you can – either through the app or Chrome browser – but for me again the “free” file size limit is the issue – its all big media files I move about. Easiest way is to “pull” from the Ipad rather than “push” from a PC (e.g. loading it up with videos for holiday).
October 29, 2019 at 3:14 pm #37849Check out “Nearby Sharing” (in the Notification Area), it’s how MS now do simple sharing and it’s via Bluetooth. It’s just for a file or two.
October 29, 2019 at 3:38 pm #37850Interesting – couldn’t see but in settings it was turned off – there – turned it on – it mentioned sharing via Bluetooth and WiFi – I will have a play. Thanks Dave – new one on me.
October 29, 2019 at 11:42 pm #37852The permissions and stuff for sharing have not changed much since Windows for workgroups 3.1. What has changed is the discovery process and setup. We can’t use the NETBIOS method any more so we are left with various publisher, responder and discovery services that need to be running to work, UPNP, DNLA, etc.

Is it this that caused M$ to remove the HomeGroup? If not somehow the HomeGroup system was a lot better at identifying Windows 10 machines – even my Linux boxes are now detected and connect better than the Windows ones!
October 30, 2019 at 8:01 am #37862It is the new responder service that was introduced with home groups that causes most problems, I will have to look up its name again, MS discovered that it is insecure so it is disabled on the latest versions of windows, recent Linux versions actually include it so they could appear in home groups !
October 30, 2019 at 8:14 am #37863The other problem with Home groups was when people tried to use Advanced sharing settings, the settings would not stick if people were a member of a Home group because the Home group settings over wrote them at every reboot, a sort of settings overlay.
October 30, 2019 at 9:58 am #37864Dave I checked out Nearby Sharing both have Blutooth (USB dongle) both are on (I send photos from mobile) yet it says not connected in nearby sharing.
I try to share but get nothing, it says make sure your device is on. I try send to bluetooth device, a window opens to select where to send your files, the box is empty.
Cheers
JohnOctober 30, 2019 at 10:14 am #37866If your sending photos to a mobile. Just use Google photos/one drive, or push bullet. The last one is encrypted.
