Just had the new Virgin router installed and enabled.

Tried to switch the wifi from the router to the old WiFi user and password I was using so I don’t have to reset up all the WiFi devices again. I’m being forced to use a different password now, as Virgin are enforcing you to use a uppercase, lowercase and a number and 8 digits long. Looks like I’ll be whipping this in to modem mode shortly and using my old Nighthawk!

Unfortunately I think they have no choice, Joe Public does need herding into setting security. Kaspersky objects to WiFi SSIDs left on default, like Netgear50, which is ridiculous.

I will not now use any ISP that doesn’t let me use my own kit, like Sky. Last year I had to swap out 6 BT “Smart” Hubs, 4 of them in small businesses which now have Drayteks (the home users have TP-Link TD-W9970). My own TalkTalk router went TU and that’s now replaced by a Draytek.

Have to admit that the Plusnet Hub One is not at all bad, althought first thing I did was change the very weak password. I am going to install a better router eventually, still have the TP Link 9980 from 3 years ago and will probably use that, it is lying in a box doing nothing. The Hub One at least has a decent webpage which allows various changes to be made and shows all devices in the network. I always know when I am near my house when I drive home, as the Hub One has a decent range and my phone pings as I drive up the Close. I have sometimes let my neighbour use my password, which is OK as she is eminently trustworthy. Nothing to do with her being a gorgeous blonde though!??

Yeah, I can switch it in to modem mode and then use my own router which I’m planning on doing next weekend. I was advised to let the line settle and hub update over the weekend before I switched it to modem mode, so I’ll do that. In the meantime, I’ve switched the Nighthawk in to Wireless Access Point and disabled the Virgin wifi so we’re back online pretty much as we were before.

I don’t want to do it this weekend, as I’m away during the week and trying to troubleshoot with the wife over the phone whilst I’m away wont be easy !
