I just have to make a post about this because this has happened multiple times in the resent years…

I just tried to open a new ebay account with one of my alternative email accounts because I listed many items for sale on ebay with my main account and html code linked images from Imgur are not being displayed so I want to see what it’s like when viewed from a different account. But it tells me an account already exists. I try a few passwords but all wrong. So I reset the password. The name in the email is Craig, so I log in into this “new” ebay account and some one has created that account with my email, I had all his detail – name, address in the US, phone number, all of it… Of course I changed it all to my details so no funny business can happen later.

But why do people do it? I had the same with facebook maybe a couple of years, I think with Twitch just prior to that, and even then I remember I was already thinking “why do people do that” because it had happened before but I can’t remember which websites they were.

Is it just me or does it happen to others too? I do have multiple email accounts, it’s not always the same account.

It doesn’t happen to me, but then I control my own email server. As to why, ebay – where you may have payment information saved. Facebook, where you may have shared sufficient info to pass any security check.

Don’t call me paranoid. I’m anonymous online for a reason, and that reason is online, paranoia should be the norm.

Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Nice CoolerMaster case, 2 x NV GTX 1070 8GB, and a whopping 32" AOC 1440P monitor.

I’d understand if I had emails like Tad123 or Tad01. But only my main is with numbers (tadaska2000). The rest areall simple two word combinations like Bluesky or Redsun. How could you get that wrong?
