I have been having a mare with an old PC I was given here. If I run the box from a live USB, for example, Mint Cinamon everything was fine including the video playback which is what it is intended for. The problem came when I installed it on an HDD. The video was choppy, the sound was lagging and it was unusable. I thought it may be an HDD issue, so I swapped it out but still, the problem persisted.
I tried a Linux install to USB but it was agony just waiting for it to start up. Nonetheless, I was not giving up.
I tried a few small distros but I did not get on with them, but then, I came across MX Linux. I tried all three desktop environments from USB and decided on Fluxbox. XFCE was not too bad at all but it did not hit the sweet spot for me. KDE seemed pointless on a lightweight distro with the system hogging plasma. Fluxbox hit the sweet spot though. Simple, clean, and too basic to send you nuts.
Anyway, I installed it on the HDD which took around 5 minutes, with no issues, and boots up quickly enough. Installed Kodi 19 and connected it to the TV server “TVHEADEND” and then give it a whirl “Deadpool was on”!. It was not perfect to start off with so I tweaked a few settings in Kodi and now it runs perfectly. So yes, I am currently chuffed with MX Linux. Now I need to try some retro gaming on the thing.
