MS updates…

One of my biggest pet hates is anything automatic. Be it car lights or wipers and most of all apps or programs doing ANYTHING that I have not told them to do. Needless to say the current state of things in regards to everything computer related to me are… nowhere near my imagined ideal scene. And just earlier I was learning encoding videos for YouTube and things started freezing and crashing so I attributed it poor quality encoding programs. Eventually when Windows Movie Maker froze and I couldn’t clear it away I decided to reboot the PC. Trying all kinds of keyboard shortcuts I eventually managed to get the Shutdown button to appear but it said “Install updates and reboot”. Feeling angry I clicked on it and it went “configuring update 101 of 110, keep pc on…”. Of course the first thing I ever do to my computers is set updates to “never check” and occasionally do the updating manually. So I force shut my pc down and boot it up again. It’s updating more… I wait for it to finish and after it rebooted a few times I go to the Processes and see the CPU is at 30%. It’s some “windows modules installer worker” doing more updating I suppose. I go to the Control Panel and to the Updates and they are set to Update Automatically… How is it possible? How can it change from Never to Automatically? I swear computers do this to me on purpose… </rant over>

Love my auto lights and wipers. Especially the auto high beam. It took me a while trust to not to blind people, but it works well. I’d say better than the majority of humans, Inc ones self.

Have you set your “Active Hours” which is the time that Updates will not activate and so avoid the problem you describe.

 

There are also several programs available which will disable auto updates.

Not sure Active Hours is going to help me. I don’t keep my computer on if I’m not using it. Is it possible Now TV could change the update settings? The first thing I did today on my computer when I got back from work was watch Game of Thrones on Now TV and it crashed a couple of times. And I noticed it has installed Cisco VideoGuard Player for the second time – it is installed twice… Or maybe one of the encoding aps I installed yesterday? But then why wait till today… It seems to have started with the Now TV Player. Well over a hundred updates that have accumulated were installed in one go. Though most Optional as I do not install them unless I have to.

If it’s Windows 10 Home, you don’t have an option not to install them I believe.

I think the only way to prevent it is to set your home internet connection as a metered connection.

Just let Microsoft get on with keeping Windows working and secure. They will do a better job of it than anyone else. Not patching allows malware to propagate.

I’m with Dave. Ms know alot more about windows and what’s needed, than any one else.

I just let the updates happen. Most of the time you don’t even realise they have happened on win 10.

I was against auto updade in the dim and distant past because i liked to have my systems “just so”.

Now that almost everything i do wants to connect to the internet though i just put up with it.

I dont have a choice though on W10 home and that bugs me because sometimes it breaks things.

The latest thing to get clobbered is anything on a Secure Rom disc so no more Doom 3 or Quake 4.

Looks like SecRom.sys has gone for good this time.
