Maya “Mint 13 or Ubuntu 12” is no longer going to receive updates any time soon if not already. Problem is my TV cards only work on Maya and nothing newer. My question is how likely is an invasion/security issues going to be if I decide to say, hold out for a year or two. It will be connected to the Internet and there is no way round that.

Just chucking the question out there. It is asked plenty in regards to windows, but what about ubuntu?

Unfortunately a whole string of drivers were made obsolete by kernel changes. It is old kernels that cause problems and you lose quite a lot of security by not updating. Your best bet would be to air gap your old Maya box and put it on a different network. Dave could probably give you much better up to date advice on that.

There is a remote chance that you may be able to just add the drivers for your TV cards to a modern Mint. This link MIGHT help – take a look. As the man says this is a bit of a cobble that will need to be redone everytime Mint updates the kernel (Mint rarely does this between releases which is notr great for security but better than using Maya)

          Thanks @edps

I go down this road twice a year. That is, playing with TV cards and Linux and it always ends up the same. 2 weeks of waisted time, stress and alcoholism 🙂 . So I am going to risk it till I find a card that is not expencive and works with a distro supported for a couple of years more.

Now, finding info on a card that is knowen to work is another mission in it’s self. 🙁

TBH I wouldn’t worry too much about it if it’s sat behind a routers firewall. You may want to turn the Linux firewall on as well.

EDIT with W10 available on E-Bay at less than a fiver (I’ve bought nothing but this year) your horizons may well be expanded ?

It might be a lot less aggro to go the route Dave is suggesting it certainly makes buying a compatible usb PVR stick a lot easier.

All my pc are licienced for 10 but 1. None are realy upto 10 and 2. As I found out today with a quick install of 7 the TV/PVR SERVERS available to windows these day are carp or outdated. Argus use to be my fave but that has not been updated for yonks, mediaportal crashed, dvb link was a trial and there was an other at cost. I like to use tvheadend. I may have forgot to mention I like to stream. I dont have a tv pluged into the roof arial direct anymore.

OK an off the wall suggestion. Buy a second-hand XBox One from CeX and add an XBox one Digital TV tuner. I will not get into the XBox/Playstation war but the XBox does make a good media streamer and PVR!

Are the tuners expencive for them and is there a pvr addon for kodi? Sounds like a good solution if kodi will conect.

The tuners are cheapish. Personally I have no idea about Kodi. The XBox One is essentially a Windows 10 in a console box. However, the answer apparently a qualified yes, but it looks a bit of a cobble to me. link

I think you would need to do a bit of exploring on the Kodi forums or maybe Planeman could answer regarding using a Firestick in this way.

Hopefully it’s going to get easier soon:

Just shows how careful you have to be when you read stuff on here.

I saw:  “May end of support and Tv cards”

I know it’s not been her week recently, but to blame her for that ….??????? Saw the ‘a’ on second reading!! Phew!!!

I could of named it DVB – T May’a’ ? Anyhow, kodi as been in the store for a while. The problem is my windows “genuine ” media center remote is easier to get working on linux than it is windows with kodi ?. I have just for now stuck the tv server in  a cupboard, out of site out of mind. There is not much to attack in my house, I do a good job of that my self. Nothing stored localy and only use gimp, ff, tbird, kodi localy. Nothing else including building this place. A bit of A/V takes care of the rest but again, I download next to nowt. Ill save some pennies, get some sff pc’s and and some dvb cards that work with modern distros, Eventualy or Look at @edps possible xbox solution.

I looked hard at what I used a TV card for long ago, and switched to a Samsung T24B350 TV/Monitor. I mainly use the screen as a monitor, can use it as a perfectly good 1080p TV and use iPlayer etc for catch up TV.

No driver worries or future obsolete TV cards.

Just a thought that might be worth sharing.
