Like all tech -heads I was enamored by M$ HoloLens and would like to have one to play with it.  I’ll confess that I agreed with M$ in their saying it was unlikely to be commercial for years. However, according to this Ars Report the Hololens became commercially useful and saved real money almost as soon as it was placed into practical design and development situations. Maybe the day is not too far away when we will be able to get one and use it for those ‘How-to’ situations.

I’m still not so sure about it being very useful in gaming other than stupid Pokemon or hunt the zombie situations.

I bought an Oculus Rift a while back and the possibilities really blew my mind!  Apart from it being early technology and still in need of much development it’s biggest failing is not being augmented reality.  If it had a higher resolution and was more comfortable to wear I’d ditch my monitor screen completely and use virtual desktops (or rather as many windows, displays and virtual ‘tabletops’ as you like in any setting you like with anyone you like).

It really does give you the feeling that you are working together with someone on the same project in the same room.  The freedom it provides is amazing but limited in that you are essentially blind to the real world.  If it was augmented reality and the screens and ‘tabletops’ I saw were in a real setting where I could drink my coffee and write with a pen etc then it would be amazing.

I can’t see AR or VR becoming mainstream any time soon, for the consumer market it will go the way of 3D.

There are many areas where it will be useful professionally, but I think it has all the pitfalls if 3D tv and some, plus a higher cost of entry.

Also in this rare case, I think the completion will be what kills it, the devs will all choose a platform, spreading the devs thin. When there is little software, there is slow adoption, and when slow adoption devs slowdown drop off too. And

With ARVR R&D being so expensive, and the way the markets are, they will need to be a hit out of the gates. Investors and or shareholders  will only allow so much money to be ploughed into projects.

If there was just one horse for the devs to jump on, I think it would have a better chance. Which goes against the usually trend.
