Low Font Weights

There is a nasty trend to use low font-weight CSS for scientific and Government data. I find that this makes it very difficult for me to read and comprehend articles where the font and background have little contrast.

Does anyone know a way of ‘fixing’ CSS fonts so that low font weight pages come out at 400 or more?
