        Good luck.

I’m no love guru, had my moments but that’s it.

Used to live in Newport, 20 odd years ago and the nightlife was amazing. Some friends I have that still live there inform me that’s it’s still awesome.

Sadly TJ’s is no more, a truly amazing place with very heavy hitting bands playing there.

Le Pub hadn’t been going long when I moved there, apparently still as good as it was way back then.

I’ll just get a new feather for one of my old hats, Steve. I’m a pensioner, you know… ☺?

            Now, which hat?…

Well done Dan, result! Hope it ends well for you both.

Thanks, all. At least I have some hope, now.

Does anyone know of any Newport accountants looking for a tax specialist?

It certainly seems that she is as ‘up for it’ as you are.

Bristol is an easy commute from Newport by road or train, and now no tolls on the bridge.

There is a lot of industry on the northern fringe (where the M4 / M5 cross), that’s 30 mins from Newport Central. Centre of Bristol +15 mins down the M32 (but not in the rush hour!). Loads of trains to Parkway (by the M4 / M5) as it’s the London line and a similar number to Temple Meads (centre) on the Cardiff – Portsmouth service. That also goes through Bath, only another 10 mins. Cardiff is easy peasy by any method of transport.

So don’t limit yourself to Newport.

I wouldn’t go back to one of the big players (I was with RSM Tenon and then, after they went bust, Baker Tilly). Too corporate for my tastes. I prefer a local practice where the clients actually matter rather than just their fee generating ability.

Both Bristol and Cardiff or on my “Places to look” list. Pretty sure I could find something in one of them, and pretty sure I can get a glowing reference from my current place. Not rushing into that, yet. Need to figure out when my lease is up here – dunno if it’s November this year, or next.

Oh, and not that it will matter to her (she’s not a material girl), but I finally caught up with my Civil Service pension and got a current statement. I have a healthy lump sum waiting in less than 6 years (not life changing, but certainly a bit of comfort), so I can at least offer her something. I also found out the ex-dragon is my named death beneficiary, so I’m going to ask Leanne if she wants me to switch to her, whatever happens with us. When you’ve been in love with someone as long as I’ve been in love with her, what the hell.

Good luck indeed Dan! I wish you both all the best and wish you luck finding a job and setting up home together. What a great story for all of us Forumites.

Thank you. though it’s still a plan coming together. I have to convince her kids (a couple of whom I’ve stayed in touch with, but haven’t seen in maybe 16 years) that this time, it’s for good.

Good luck with them Dan. I had a few teething troubles with my missus’ two at first. Mostly the daughter, who is now the most affectionate, caring daughter I could wish for. After I dragged her out of a night club at 16, after 2 am, she didn’t speak to me for a week. Last year, with a 13 yo daughter of her own, she said thanks and understood why. Our son was and is the most laid back lad you could meet, but quizzed me about what I represented to his mum, sister and himself. I said, “I am just going to be myself, I love your mum and am fond of you two. Let’s just see what happens, because I won’t stop being me and none of you have to change, although we may have to adapt to each other.”

Now he is my Mr. Reliable: no one had a better son and we are very close. All I can say is, just be yourself.
