Tonight my team Forest knocked Newcastle out of the EFL Cup, 3-1, in an amazing, heart – stopping game. Past season, we also knocked them out, by 3 goals to 2 on their own ground. This season, leading 1-0 from the 4th minute by a Darryl Murphy goal, we dominated the Geordies throughout the game, just not converting chances and Karl Darlow, the goalie we sold, making some great saves. With 2 minutes to go they equalised against the run of play and the referee decided to give them a lifeline of SIX* minutes Added Time, don’t know where he found that. It worked the other way for Newcastle: I was expecting penalties, as in the last two rounds when we scraped through. But in the 94th minute, Matty Cash scored for us. Then in the 97th* minute, Bastião Dias added the 3rd and Rafa’s team were out. I was dancing around my tablet as I heard the final whistle: can’t get anything other than Freeview while the fireplace removal restricts putting up more than just the TV connected to the roof antenna.

The ‘revenge’ part? – on March 9th 1974, Forest were Division Two pre-Cloughie but had a good side. Newcastle were First Division and were being beaten in the FA Cup 6th Round at the City Ground 3-1, until Geordie fans invaded the pitch and stopped the game. Referee restarted and we lost 4-3, but the FA ordered the game replayed at a neutral venue: Goodison Park, March 18th. I managed to get Army Leave from Germany and a ticket, it ended 1-0 and we had played them off the park, just could not score. Got another ticket for the replay, again at Goodison on the 21st. We lost 1-0 to Malcolm McDonald, the so-called “Supermac” -anyone remember him? Got home in a foul mood, not improved by another N.I.Tour later that month.

The proper outcome of that pitch invasion, should have been a bye into the next round and a big fine for Newcastle. Neither of those things happened and the result tonight has been along time coming, especially after last season’s result. As my Forest mad niece posts on FB – UUUUUUURRRRREEEEEEEDDDDDSSSSS!

*As a generous gesture, the ref gave us a chance to make it 3, by adding another couple of minutes.By then we could have played them another 10 minutes and probably scored a few more, there are a lot of young legs in that Forest team now.??

Had a bad Chemo Day today, this has made me happy again.

Whatever works, Bob. Take the high and stuff the low.

Good luck with the continuation of the fireplace removal saga, glad to hear of some progress. What’s the latest on your BT/OR/Plusnet situation? Hopefully a similarly successful resolution waiting in the wings.

I’ve just upgraded to fibre and am just around the corner from the cabinet so I’m getting 37.8 /l and 9.4 u/l after a week. You should get a marked improvement from your current mediocre connection.

That final was v Liverpool, and was the start of their domanace. The football play in that final was up there with the speed of play of today’s Liverpool team. It’s a cracking game to watch. Well first half is cagey, but second half is dynamite.

Newcastle probably did you a favour that day bob. It’s a shame you had to go to Wooderson, was it then still over due a makeover lol

Well Done on your result. ? A trip to anfield may be in your future. Recreate the final that never was.

              Thanks guys.

Steve, I remember that Final very well. I was back in Germany in a local pub whose landlord was ex-Bündeswehr and liked Brit squaddies in his pub, crackers about English football, watched every English game he could see on German TV. Unfortunately they were not showing the game on German TV live, only highlights later. We listened to it around a Tranny radio: me. a mate from Hull and an absolutely bonkers old mate from Birkenhead, Danny Mc, still a phone & FB mate today and still crackers, never knew another bloke to know so much obscene language and fill his conversations with them all. ???? I have since seen the game and agree; great football from both sides, but the best team won. Liverpool seemed to get stronger and faster as the game wore on.

After the Forest-Newcastle saga above, there were 2 Geordies from our unit listening to the game as well. As you probably imagine, after each Liverpool goal I cheered. When they held up the Cup, I cheered. (A rare occurrence, me cheering another team ??) One of the Geordies came over and stuck out his hand: “Good game Bob, no hard feelings eh?” – then swung a punch which I mostly avoided. It was his last mistake, I had been wanting to punch him after he laughed about the Forest result when it happened. So I decked him and Danny did for his mate.

Gooodison was still a ramshackle old barn then, but I have to say that the Blue Meanies at the game, were (unusually) pleasant and actually wanted us to win. There was a very good chippy behind the Gwladys Street stand, a Chinese chippy which served fantastic Cod & chips. “You wan’ sal an vinga wi that?” So that was a bit of a consolation, good scran before the long, miserable trip home.
