I’ve recently switched back to using my Gmail account rather than a separate email account (I was using Fastmail).

Part of this, I switched my NAS (and the one I have at my girlfriends parents) to using my Live account for emailing me updates. Anyhow, long story short, Microsoft considered this to be spam and locked me out of my account. I signed in and that seemed to clear it (by verifying my account) but time will tell if it happens again.

Basically, Gmail was fine sending these updates, but I didn’t want my sent box clogging up with the emails! If it happens again, I’ll look into using the iCloud SMTP servers and see if that stops things getting blocked. Perhaps it’s Irish IP causing issues or the fact the messages are automated and happening every 6 hours and being of similar content (telling me backups are successful). Mind, I wouldn’t have thought that would have been enough traffic to get them to block the account.

I set up a unique gmail address for every customers Synology box and have that send the updates (daily backup, monthly health report, update notifications and any urgent issues) to me and them.

None of them have missed a beat yet (neither have the NAS). I can’t remember logging into any of the gmail accounts after day one but I have my email address as the recovery address for them all just in case.

For my own NAS I’ve also paired my phone to receive any status changes or errors.

Can’t say I have heard of your use being a problem.

The only problem I have had was a while ago and it appeared to have been caused by push mail to my samsung phone.

It seems that if you have a samsung account and you register a livemail account with them then there is a deal where MS allocates an exchange server account to your livemail address.

Exchange server forwards any incoming mail to samsung and they send you a notification.

If you use the default mail app on your phone to read mail you are actually getting it from samsung.

The problem was I was never logging in with MS directly so after 6 months they blocked my account.

Just logging in from my PC fixed the problem and it has not returned.

That’s a handy idea – might well do that.

I had been considering trying my hand at a new Gmail account anyhow – one that is a bit more friendly for giving out that my username here but it’s hassle moving email (as I found out with the Fastmail one – it ended up really only being a front end for my Gmail) really!
