I’m thinking of learning how to sign, and teaching Alice how to sign, so I was wondering if anyone here can sign, and can give me an idea of how hard it is.
I’m also looking for resources so that I can learn at home without going to lessons. I’m struggling to get out of the house with Alice, so something we can do at home would be ideal. Cost is also an issue, as money is tight for now, so something free would be great, or low cost if it’s not too often.
I’ve got Android phones and tablets, and Kodi on the PC, so apps or YouTube videos would be handy.
Thanks in advance guys 🙂

http://www.schoolofsignlanguage.com/learn-online/learn-online-free-only/
http://www.ndcs.org.uk/family_support/communication/sign_language/support_for_bsl.html

The NDCS looks to be pretty good and has a section for getting help from local authorities, including a section for Wales. You need to sign up ( no pun intended ) with an email and login to access the info.
I seem to recall when I was volunteering for MENCAP a few years ago, they offered something like this as part of “Personal Development”.
Good luck.
November 7, 2017 at 11:55 am #13342My eldest gdaughter learned how to Sign at school, simply because there was a girl whose family had moved into the area and the new girl was profoundly deaf. GD is a really caring lass and moved to sit next to the girl, learned how to communicate with her and helped her with schoolwork. That lass is now at Uni and still in contact with our GD, although her Service family has moved away.
You don’t explain why you need this Ryan, if it’s a personal thing tell me to MMOB, I won’t mind.
I know our GD went to a local Hearing Impaired evening class with the girl, which is where she learned how to sign. I know you said this: ” I’m struggling to get out of the house with Alice.. ” but one visit to a local Hearing Impairment place might give you the Home Learning tools and advice you need, from professionals.
Nice to see a lovely old name revived for your daughter, btw. It was also my mother’s name.

I found the NDCS website last night, but with the greatest of respect to them, the old looking site and the phone number as a first point of contact threw me. I wasn’t sure if I’d found a proper site. I didn’t have a clue where to look on it either, so the links are a great help 🙂
Bob: Nothing personal behind the reasons for looking into sign language. It’s something that a few of us toyed with in school after some of my friends did a bit of care work on weekends, but I never took it further than learning some of the alphabet. I always meant to learn how to sign, but never got around to it. Alice is at the age where she’s picking things up really quickly, but can’t quite speak yet, so I thought that signing might be something nice to learn together that could also be handy in the future.
My mother suggested Edith for Alice, but my wife rejected it saying it was awful. My mother then told her that it was my grandmother’s name ??

November 8, 2017 at 2:56 pm #13350Both of mine have had various Anglo-Saxon names, at various times, that they were not given when Registered….?☺
One of my great-nieces (long story, convoluted family!) has a girl they named Florence. “I love those old names Uncle Bob.”
She was made up when I told her that was the name of my maternal grandma, who passed in 1939. That made her the baby girl’s 5Gmother. I had a Tree made up for baby Flo’s 1st birthday. I am a gg Uncle several times over now, can’t keep pace. Most of my lot breed like rabbits! Only Smiths and Jones have more British surnames than Williams. At this moment in time…
Jones and Williams are of Welsh origin. My grandad called that Celtic Revenge.
