Don’t know if you have already opened the lappy but have you tried here  http://bit.ly/2BM53Q9  Way 2 and choose keep my files when given the option in the menu, NOT remove everything.
At least you will know if the HD is faulty and this option means not having to boot with any other disk/usb.

Thanks StevieP – the problem is that I cannot access the laptop, I can get to the initial desktop and insert a password, then all it does is show a blue spinning circle (for hours).

Anyway have now taken it out and am trying to read it via Sharkoon on my PC after Kasp Rescue 10 told me it was safe – can take > 1hr to read the HDD and then if it see owt, it might not be able to open it!  Still waiting at the moments to see if it will access the date so that I can remove the files and bin the rest.

The last time I had a problem like that I did as you did and removed the HD. It was back in the XP days. When I connected the drive as an additional drive in another PC, the PC announced that the disc had some issues with the OS install. It promptly fixed them. Replacing the drive in the original PC showed all was well once more. I have no idea what had caused the corruption but it ran for several more years without trouble.

            Good luck ?

I really would have tried the repair install option from the W10 DVD first though ?

WofF – No W10 DVD to play about with,  mouse worked if you call spinning blue circles continuously ‘working’, the ONLY control that I had of the PC was the ability to enter the BIOS and the Power switch.

Anyway have now got the data off the HDD and soon the laptop will be on its way to the tip. I won’t be shedding any tears for that little bu**er ever again!!

Oh well. Comes a time to call time ?

Out of interest though did you mean that you just don’t have a Windows setup DVD ?

Yes the laptop was handed to me by a friend – it was one of their business models – so data was far more important than a 3+ year old jobbie. Bought in PC World brand new and of course they didn’t bother with the ‘make a backup DVD of the OS etc’.

I 100% trust the owner and his company BUT after realising that there was precious little I could do with the HDD in situe, I took it out – as a business item – it’s tax deductible and after4 years – value = £0, but data was valuable.

Having got it out and played about with it I was eventually able to read off the data and recover some 60GB off of it.  Thinks … lets try to install a new copy of W10 from Media Creator tool BUT no W10 or W7 licence sticker attached!! They didn’t know what the original OS was 7 or 10, Home, Prof or what so a bit stuck, MS were excellent I read out a few numbers on the PC but they were not licence numbers, having thought about it they said that if they gave me a case reference and I could obtain the original PC World receipt they could tell me the original OS. The guy at MS couldn’t have been more helpful.

TBH in getting the thing apart some of the interconnecting wires became damaged, but having been told  “data, data data and sod the PC”, I wasn’t too worried, in fact I’ve been told to bin it already as the data has been recovered. Strange the lack of the MS sticker on it – no trace where it might have been or worn off either.

Licence stickers are no more. My guess it it came with W8 as that’s when it started.

On a new machine the licence key is stored in the UEFI (BIOS). On a machine that’s been upgraded the MS activation servers hold a “fingerprint” of the system. You install W10 with no key and when it activates it will realise it’s been on this machine before and sort itself out. I’ve done many and never known it fail.

So, even with a new HDD, W10 will go back on with no problems and no keys.

Thanks Dave, it might be worth considering if any one with nimble fingers can re-attach the ribbon cables.

They don’t want it back anyway – might be a project for a while.
