I made a surprising discovery recently. Wheels on an office type chair can be the very worst thing for use on some floors. As the char moves easily it appears it should do less damage. I have recently found that the problem is that some wheel have such a tiny contact area that the point load shatters the floor covering causing appearance changes. The problem is possibly made worse as the fact that the chair moves so easily means it is constantly on the move. Belatedly I have removed the castors and put inverted mushroom shaped pad type feet which I faced (bottomed?) with felt pads. The chair does not constantly move under me and I am hoping that it will do less long term damage. It is also very much quieter to move when needed.
February 17, 2017 at 9:54 am #3960It’s also a problem that the castor surface gets grit embedded in the surface. The problem is then made worse as the grit wears the surface down or breaks it up after repeated scratching.
I had one of those chairs, until the wife put her back out in it, and it had done the same to our laminate. Less of a problem as we were having the floor replaced when the extension was built.
I replaced the chair with one of the carvers from the dining set. More inconvenient, but less damage, – to the floors and my ears!! I put felt pads on the bottom of the legs and all these have done to the engineered wood floor we put down, has been to wear the colour off the top, this has been very effectively sorted out with a wood stain diluted in a little meths applied with a cotton wool pad.
On the old forum there was a topic about plastic floor protectors that went over the area concerned. Not pretty but very effective.
February 17, 2017 at 10:10 am #3962I’ve got felt pads on the armchairs and poof (sp?) as well, my office chair up the other end of the room (same floor) I swapped out the casters for these and the floor is still looks good as new. I’ve actually had more grief from the fol pads trapping tiny pieces of grit and lightly scratching the floor. I need my chair to move, so opted for the replacement castors – the felt pads make sense just be sure keep the floor spotlessly clean!

Be a hard job to get the pronunciation changed in this house now! But I’ll keep the spelling for my word tin!
February 17, 2017 at 10:35 am #3965I’ve always pronounced it poofay, as I thought that it came from the French, ( always sounded a bit Hyacinth Bucket though ) but your original thought for the spelling, got subverted and went down an entirely different path.
On checking my spelling with Google it gave a pronunciation icon that gave it as poofee.

It’s a footstool. Unless you are French. 😉
A poof is something else. :bye:
